Drumkit From Hell drum mapping SUCKS!

I'm sorry, but I just find it completely unplayable. I've heard some say that the GM standard drum mapping is "cheesy," but I don't know why. Does anybody else like it?
I'd like to know if there are any DFH kit files that have the mapping laid out like the amazing ns7 kit. ns7 is so good, I'm using it instead of DFH! I could manually construct a DFH kit in Battery, but it's just too tedious.

I rather like DFH's mapping, but it was a pain in the ass to fix up sequences that I've already written to conform to it. Once I started using DFH in new tracks, though, it makes perfect sense to me. Especially having the left/right kicks where they are, considering I use those metal blast-beats and whatnot. I think it would have been awkward to try to mash the five or six hats and the four snares into the GM standard. Of course, now when I use GM drum mappings, I'm totally confused.

The mapping is horrible but the kits are great.
So we suffer and come back for more...

I agree but try it in DR-008 if you can. Does your sequencer have anything like Cakewalk drum maps so you can instantly route each GM standard hit to the appropriate DFH hit? Not that bad to set up and then you're done.

I like the dkfh mapping, especially that there are 2 keys (right and left) for the snare, kick and toms. I often had to remap other kits so I did not have to try to repeat hitting the same key, when it would be easier and more realistic to hit 2 different keys.

Having two bass drums next to each other and two different snares next to each is one thing -- I like that! Even ns7 kit has that. It's the "Spread-All The-Shit-Over-The-Entire-Keyboard-Making-It- Impossible-To-Play-A-Groove" philosophy that I detest. I mean, what were they thinking??? Can anyone explain the logic behind this retarded mapping?

Reminds me of old kits on my EMu. The hithat would be mapped across like one octave, the snare acorss another octave, with each individual velocity on a seperate key. While I prefer GM mapping, I still like other mappings sometime.geeseaplenty wrote:Having two bass drums next to each other and two different snares next to each is one thing -- I like that! I don't follow. What's wrong with layering as many samples possible on one key, or like the Ambient Kit found here, having two keys for each tom and the snare? Does DFH follow the GM standard? If it does, that's 46 velocity layers per key! That makes sense to me if you wanna lay down a basic groove (no Steve Smith, unless it's Journey-era Steve Smith) and do some finessing later in the MIDI editor.I rather like DFH's mapping, but it was a pain in the ass to fix up sequences that I've already written to conform to it. and that's why I prefer... just kidding. But, it's all about the mapping IMO. There are plenty of great sounding drum libraries out there but not all of them are designed to perform as good as they can from a midi keyboard. Maybe if you are triggering from pads it's different. You have to go through the hassle of remapping it to your pads anyway. But, for keyboard controlled drum programming I like to have a comfortable layout for the hands to reach the expressive elements of the kit.

That's one reason the drum maps in Sonar 2 were a big improvement. I just bought dkfh 2 and I am using it in a project.
When there is something I want to do that would be made easier with a different key layout, I just use the drum map. I don't bother remapping the entire kit. Rather I map the drums I want to use to achieve the effect I want.
For example, there is only one closed hi hat that mutes the open hi hat in the dkfh map. But I wanted to play it with three fingers (2 for the closed/muting hi hat) to get the effect I wanted. So I just created a map that put the closed/muting hi hat one two keys rather than one. Then I was able to play the part I wanted.
I guess the idea behind the dkfh mapping is you are playing the keys with two hands, like a drummer would be hitting the snare, toms, etc with his right and left hands. Right now, I am probably would be more comfortable with the right and left hits right next to each other, but maybe I just need to get used to it. Also, with my style of finger drumming (worked on while sitting in a lot of boring classses in school), I would tend to use a thumb, my index finger and my middle finger to play a certain drums, so I would really need three keys with the same drum (or different drums depending upon what I was trying to achieve).
Of course, with midi, you can always slow the part down to get it right.
