interesting. does it still use a regular MAX install (ie 32-bit), or does that mean there's now a 64-bit build of that?

I've just downloaded and installed Max for live 6 64bit into it :)
Ableton support says the Live 9 beta download description is now out of date they will update it when they can.

You can still use Live 9 beta 32bit with the 32bit Max for live.

You currently have to download it from within live's browser. It wants to install Pace/Ilok grrrrrrr

I didn't know it needed that?!

I have Live 8 suite plus a free upgrade to 9 - how do I access the beta?

Can't get into Max for Live. It adds latency dictated by your audio buffer settings to each device. At least with VSTs/AUs you can set your plug-in buffer separately to be lower than your audio buffer. But with M4L devices you can't. Don't want to add all that latency.

neither did i, and i don't want it so i told it not to install it (it's a separate installer that pops up along the way) but it still seems to work? the beta is here https://www.ableton.com/en/articles/live-9-beta/

OK done that - now it says I have to install the full Max 6.1 to get Max 4 Live:
Top FAQ

If I want Max for Live, why do I have to download Max?
Max for Live is included in Max. Download Max and you will also get the Max for Live functionality.
That's a bit dumb, I don't want the full Max and I see why it wants to install Pace now too as the full Max uses Pace. So do I have to put up with having a demo of Max full on my system just to run Max 4 Live or can I uninstall that?

Max4Live is basically a bridge between Max and Live, as well as some prebuilt stuff. You can't run stuff with only the bridge, you still need Max to be there. If Max is initiated via M4L, though, you dont a 'regular' Max license.
