I don't really have any opinion on Synthmaker as I am not sure I have ever used a SM synth, it seems to be rather rare. My only synth that might have been made with SM is AM's Freehand, I guess I read that somewhere, or maybe I am confusing it with another synth...

Post

Alan Aztec's Donk Machine is pretty excellent, though for a
specific purpose. but you'll also find a lot of synthmaker
creations that could be described as 'same-y'. same story.

to be fair( fair?!) synthedit really kicked off the VST thing,
as there weren't many plugins around at the time. adding VST
export was the stroke of genius that raised synthedit above
other stuff like sync modular and reaktor. it is only recently
that oversampling was included as a standard feature, so com-
parison of (older stuff?)with recent commercial products isn't
really representative. and even coded stuff has bugs: i won't
mention two recent profile instruments that won't work correctly
in Orion.

it'd be good to see what Receptor users have to say on the matter.

speaking as somebody that has bought synthedit synths in past, theirs just no reason to use synthedit plugs anymore, the same things can also be said about synthmaker. save as plugins dont perform as well cpu wise, are often unstable, arpegiators can have host sync issues, drum samplers cant preview samples, and my most hated issue, the sound buffering that happens when switching presets(synthmaker suffers worse then synthedit with this) and development is slow as molasses.

were reaching a point in freeware where theres more synths being released that are coded then there are decent se/sm plugs. yes, theres the rare bunch of se/sm plugs that do 'showcase' the power and quality se/sm plugs can have but really at this point its more like why bother.

cm magazine, beat mag, uhe, among tons of other great developers have released enough free coded synths/fx to cover all bases a producer with budget restraints will need.

and, even hg fortune himself the god of synthedit recently stated that due to the slow development of synthedit, all development has reached a standstill.

who knows if synthmaker can avoid the same fate.

Wow, so bad, eh? And why is development so slow? The founders must have earned quite a bit with SE, so they should be interested in keeping it going.

Then again, maybe there is only so many features an intuitive synth can have. Ever more exotic features won't help much, at the end of the day it still is the sound that matters. So if new features don't improve the sound or enable completely new sounds, there is not much point in it. And even new sounds are often not really necessary, unless you build your entire music on crazy sound.

Recently I have seen more and more SE synths with those multi-stage envelope modules. In theory they are very flexible, but frankly, I don't need them, they only make sound creation more complicated than the conventional ADSR knobs.

The same goes for those complex oscillator modules that drown you in options.

i mean, i hate to sound like a turd, but synthedit/synthmaker plugs users are in total denial, and think that one day, se/synthmker will will rule the freeware roost, just as linux users are in denial and think that linux is gaining market share. it wont/its not. and reason why, funding. there's no money in freeware. and theirs no money to pay the developers to develop the software.

and such, its a viscous cycle. best explained by the big bang theorys sheldon. "you know, it occurs to me that you could solve all your problems by having more money". apple is a unix based system, its has become what linux never will, due to large development funding. thats the truth.

Its $70 product that, going by the numbers Jeff has given in the past, probably doesnt average 100 sales a year. You do the maths.

never seen a single developer claim that, sounds like bullshit to me.
, just as linux users are in denial and think that linux is gaining market share.
it is. android is linux-based.
and reason why, funding. there's no money in freeware.
incorrect conclusion, incorrect assertion.

as well as completely incorrect.

apple isnt in the market position it is because of development funding, its in the position its in because of music and app sales.

OK, that's not many licenses, I thought they would be selling more. Maybe they should raise the price a bit, maybe double it. Sure, 150 bucks looks like much, but then again, most people who actually sell their SE creations probably earn much more with them. It is an investment. To just play around as a hobby the free version is enough.

well, you obviously have all the answers. what i stated is more true then not true. linux is not gaining market share on the desktop, we are talking about the desktop. not mobile. dont recall saying they did say that, it was an assumption. it is all about funding. but you can argue among yourself l8. conclusion.

no, im just not using made-up 'facts' to base fallacies on, like wot you are.

no, it actually isnt.

there's no 'we' here, just your weaselly moving of the goalposts. unless you're trying to claim that something is 'failing' as freeware if its failing in the one niche you retroactively decided to mention.

somehow its increasing success in other niches doesnt count when you claim its failing, eh? disingenuous bollocks.

and yes, linux is getting more use on the desktop too, according to various studies. and in some of those same studies, apple is losing share on the desktop.
it is all about funding.
the last thing freeware develoment has ever been about is funding. hence the existence of just about everything the internet your using relies on, from DNS to Apache. If you're going to think of a bogus argument, try thinking of a better bogus argument, one without thousands of examples proving you completely and utterly wrong.

i'm struggling to remain pertinent. who do these bums think they are wearing flared trousers? with their long hair. they should wear proper trousers. please respond.
you come and go, you come and go. amitabha neither a follower nor a leader be tagore "where roads are made i lose my way" where there is certainty, consideration is absent.

You should feel relieved that they are wearing trousers at all.

You will hardly reflect on what he was saying when you rip apart his post, taking every sentence out of context. Plus it is no good style hacking on every single point he made, sounds very offensive to say the least.

I'd already 'reflected' on it before I responded to it, thanks.

And as for taking them out of context, that's not what Im doing. Im actually putting my responses in context.
Plus it is no good style hacking on every single point he made, sounds very offensive to say the least.
Im not really concerned whether some random finds the style offensive or not. How come you're not so bothered about other posts where the content is offensive? Sly ad hominem, is it?

he loves to argue, should have been a lawer instead of a musican. i made some good points, yes, free opensource software lacks serious funding which is why most free software stays in beta or never passes v1.0 like inkscape, still not 1.0 after 8 years, i mean, the dream/passion from the developers are there, but they have jobs and work in there spare time. if there lucky, they will get corporate/private funding like ubuntu and mint. but mostly what happens is the software remains un-finished. he too busy arguing to consider what i said.
