Channel Strip Comparison from all the famous DAWs [Infographic]

Actually, Reaper has taken a step in that direction: you can put any MIDI controllable plugin parameter in the "track controls", so you can sort-of put together your own channel strip in the track or mixer panel and have the most interesting controls always available.braj wrote:I would imagine they could create a generic GUI for channel strips that let you define say three parameters from any VST, then you could really use the mixer to much better effect.
So you could load a Waves channel strip into track 1, the SSL strip into track 2 and the Softube one into track 3 - but you could have all 3 tracks display the knobs to control, say, gain, output, compressor threshold and some EQ band gains.
But I agree, it would be a great step if VST would embrace a HTML5-like concept, where there are certain pre-defined elements like vst_gain, vst_eq_freq1, vst_comp_thresh that designers could use to "tag" their plugin parameters, so that DAW developers could create generalized GUIs that don't have to be programmed but can just call pre-defined elements - if available.
You know, like in HTML5 where there are pre-defined tag types, <article> <nav> etc.

Even if you use complete themes like Imperial, the appearence is just that ... lip stick on an interface pig. The underlying ugly shows up immediately as soon as you actually try to use it for anything.Arglebargle wrote:If it helps to dissuade you, Reaper has certain GUI elements that appear to have come from Windows 3.1.OzWozEre wrote:Damn, I shouldn't have seen this.mabian wrote:I'm afraid it's a bit tricky involving REAPER... there are some themes which are widely used and are almost official (Imperial, Rado, etc.) which look very different from the default... so, while it's fair that only default strips are compared, actually a lot of people is not using the default - at least in REAPER)...

That Imperial theme is absolutely stunning![]()
I guess I have to look into Reaper now since I'm such a superficial twat

Your viewing angle: It should do everything, if not, it's "less than perfect", you see a negative.
My angle: It already does more than most (all their plugs in the mini view with no exceptions) so I view that as a positive... in that context.
It's all just words obviously, no biggie... but perfection in these cases actually doesn't exist (the philosophical full cup o' DAW coffee
Thanks Braj. Nothing to debate about.

Well, not really, I would say the feature is incomplete, 'philosophically' speaking. The design philosophy that says you should be able to make adjustment to key parameters from within the mixer without opening a window breaks down when you don't use Presonus plugins. You saying I am viewing it as a pessimistic 'cup half full' has some judgmental, negative connotations in my mind, and I simply do disagree, it is 'broken' in a fundamental way, which is probably why you don't hear anyone raving about how great the S1 mixer is. i think if it had this feature fleshed out it would be much more appreciated. Reason for instance also has their inline-editing plugins, but they are always on built, into the channel, where Studio One's are enabled as you add plugins. Having inconsistent behavior between plugins would be a usability bug to me.

However, I think Reaper has the mixer exactly right from a "function" standpoint. It has multiple views (skinny, fat, multi-row etc..). It shows every route and plugin. It is tied to the arrange view in a fundamental way, instead of seeming like the mixer is working on a different project entirely.
Unfortunately, that functionality is goofey to use in practice do to the weird meandering and inconsistent action system and other stuff that has been discussed to death (insert dead horse being beat'n to death here).

Hey guys,
I would like to ask you for images of any program's channel strip you want. You may also send me any variations you want.
For example, do you use energy xt? Send me a screenshot of the mixer, channel strip, bus, master etc in order to include them into my second infographic.
I wanted to ask you. What information you want to see in the infographic?
Compose an email with the images and the information and send me an email at DimigoMail( at )Gmail( . )Com
In the subject are you have to write "For Infographic".
I will also include the name and 1 link for each person per program with the most information.
Thanks for your time!

Sweet! Never knew about that... and since you can turn it on and off, I'll just be leaving that option active...braj wrote:And where is that? I don't see it in my install.Muzik 4 Machines wrote:in options.txt
add the option -ShowDeviceSlots
EDIT:
well here it is:

Very cool!
Is there a list of all such options currently available?

Nice comparison. But I have to add that the Reason 6 channel strip actually is only the "small" strip from the Reason Essentials version.
It lacks the Insert, Send & most importantly the SSL EQ section (242 type color scheme "Black Knobs").

And you can collaps every section with a double click if you don't need them.
Cheers,
Sebastian
