While there is a long list of synth-based and drum apps, there seems to be limited space for acoustic, string sounds, except for Garageband and Sampletank, the latter which is i can't use much, as it does not work with many sequencer apps and has no audiobus.
Does anyone feel the memory and processor needed for such instruments as piano, guitar, strings, etc is too much for a tablet device at the present state of technology?

Have a look at BS16i you can sequence any soundfont instrument you can find then and record it via audiobus

Fl studio mobile has a set of orchestral instruments available as an IAP.

I believe the issue is that there is a limited amount of ram that can be access for sample playback- thus the quality is very limited. If you want hardware workstation quality- it's there- if you want multi-gig sample libaries- not possible with the current technical limitations from Apple.

You are right. There do seem to be more synth-based apps. There ARE sample-based apps such as Alchemy Mobile and bs-16i (uses SoundFonts). BeatMaker 2 lets you create your own samples. But I do agree with you, the acoustic sounds are limited for iOS apps. For piano sounds, I now use iGrand Piano.

I like GarageBand, but the polyphony is too limited. I am extremely disappointed with the strings in SampleTank. Too harsh and too few. Why does the Cello have such a heavy vibrato? Let me control the amount with the mod wheel. I do like some of the pianos in SampleTank, though now I use iGrand.

I'm not sure memory is an issue. You should be able to get a nice number of samples in under a Gig. Though, size of the device certainly plays a factor. This is one reason I now have 64GB. I have several music apps that take up more than 1 GB.

I'm with you, though. I'd like to see more apps covering these types of sounds.

Thanks for all the responses. I will check out BSi and thumbjam, i had a while back and deleted it. I think it has audiobus now, so i will try for sure!

I know most trial versions of VSTS on desktops have under a gig of data, so there's no reason why we should not run these types of instruments on an ipad(at least, say 50 or so presets)
I guess synths are just easier to make from a developer standpoint. FL Mobile expansions are decent, though, they just need to cover a wider spectrum and add audiobus to the app.
iMaschine has really great bread and butter sounds, but good luck getting an update from them, or a simple audio-paste function, let alone audiobus.(No update in almost a 6 months, cmon)

Well, given the growing number of IOS music makers, it should not be long until we see more apps like this.
