Are all hosts share more or less the same CPU performance when running plugins?

Well, there was a good shot of TNC humor mixed in mine somewhere :D

But yeah, think about it. People are not likely just making stuff up when they talk about their real-world performances, but the results seem to differ quite a bit.

Sometimes adding a feature means higher CPU-use, sometimes not. Most features do not use any ressources when not used
New features like elastic audio do require more juice. That, was my point.
Plus, let's face it, a huge behemoth DAW takes more juice than newer streamlined DAWs like Reaper etc. ReNoise is pretty CPU efficient probably because of the way controllers etc. interact with it, dunno.
Plus, people use plug ins that drain CPU, when if we all used only the plug ins available in 2001 we would never run into issues in the first place. Developers are going to use CPU when it becomes available for their plug ins, it makes them sound richer.

According to some here, I should be having a hard time with my poor fruityloops shite and cheapo interface & drivers. Yet I haven't used any apps as CPU-efficient as Didier's code.

Either I'm awesome (I personally blessed my computer ), lucky (I don't appear to conform to 'rules of the universe' :wheee:), or, just maybe, baseless generalizations are being spewed from mouths, like pork pie crumbs at @ porkers' convention

KVR porkies; they all squeel eventually 8)

Why would you say that? Do you like being uncool to people?

Again, people can only report what THEY EXPERIENCE. You really don't honestly think all people just say that like we've got some personal axe to grind, do you?

Ok, so that answers my question (no I didn't click on the link)

I learned something today. You must just be trolling.

Many seems to get better Cubase performance and stability on mac than windows. My experience is exactly the opposite. Cubase is rock solid on mac and gives better performance.

Anyway.. For several reasons I've been testing Studio One lately and I would say it is a bit more cpu hungry than Cubase. As a totally unprofessional basic test I tested the behaviour of Studio One Free on both linux with wine, then windows 7 pro on same machine and then on my mac. It works surprisingly well in linux but same machine with windows gives about 25% better performance. More precence instances etc. Same project that brings windows to it's knees works smoothly on mac. Not that those two can even be compared directly...

Guess what I'm trying to say it is rather difficult to compare this thing because there are so many factors in the soup.

But that is fair. My theory is that not everyone works under the same conditions.

I work at 48k/128 buffer. In fact, all of my hosts provide the the ability to have all elements w/o hiccups. That's how I judge

Some work at substantially higher SR's, some work at 44.1. Some have buffers of 512, others 64 (which I did when I worked at 44.1) So the idea that it's BS/pork for someone to say something is absurd. What possible reason would someone have to give results other than what is happening on their system. Answer? none. With VERY few exceptions.

Given the number of differences in our workflow and hardware/software combinations we should expect some kind of difference in terms of how each DAW would perform. And, if one is reporting certain issues with some such then it should be pretty obvious that those issues are legit..that they occurred as the reporter reported them....and not just 'lies' or what have you. :)

Live 8 64bit and Studio One 2 64bit are the same CPU.

More anecdotal evidence here, but I do seem to be able to squeeze more performance out from Reaper than Cubase in terms of VST/VSTi. However, difference in workflow overrides any performance issues. Point being, for me*, finding a host in which one is comfortable and productive far outweighs the statistical amount of plugins I can use at one time.

* de facto KVR asbestos pants disclaimer in action there...

Amen, nailing the hit perfectly.

I don't think it's about statistical data. I think it's about not having the thing choke on you while you are writing the next big thing :D

My poor ol' gal the 6750/32 bit still works. I used to have cubase and I could max it out pretty easily. Now that reaper is more or less what I have on it, it's much better (had to use it when this had the virus)

I think that says a lot, though I'M CERTAIN others will disagree :hihi:

Post

true dat, but I think it does depend on your machine.
I can max out my new computer if i wanted, with LuSH-101s and premium saturation algorithms everywhere, but generally, it takes a f**king big project to choke it. Whereas I would have considered a more CPU efficient DAW a while back, now it is pretty much unnecessary.

Who knows, by the time Cytomic's dream EQ arrives I might just NEED to be switching trackers. Unless the new twelvety core has arrived by then :P

That reminds me, not to go all "off topic" but......

Seems to me, computing power hasn't improved much in the 3+ years since I built this computer. Oh sure "benchmarks" are higher but cost seems to be up and there is little if any gain.

I'm i7 860 2.8ghz. I think it's pretty fab tbh. Now, similar ghz is "benchmarked" higher but provided very little gain in our arena that I can see.

Full circle.....I'd think that for 1000 usd you SHOULD be able to build an incredible system that kicks my ass six ways from sunday. I'm not sure you can  Just an interesting thought.....from someone who won't build a new computer unless I'm forced to. (wait, hibidy, you........are not interested in new computer tech? :o  )
