sooo....

my girlfriend and i recently had a baby (yay!) but that means my time to work on music is now severely limited to late nights (boo!). because of that im looking into headphones. i do NOT have a lot of money to spend (i shouldnt spend any really) so, in reading another thread ive narrowed my choices down to either audio-technica ath-m50, or krk kns6400.

it seems the general consensus is the krks.

ill listen to any advice on that anyone wants to give.

my real question is this: has anyone used the focusrite vrm box?

is it just a gimmick, or is it actually helpful? if it is helpful...is it helpful enough to spend the money on it?

My choice is Beyer DT250- 250 ohm, super linear and speaker friendly. No Surprises. Krk has its own sound, not recommended for good translation. Try TB Isone for HRTF speaker/ambient emulation.

I swear by Samson sr 850s, they run about $70 and have a balanced frequency response, IMO. On a personal note, it helps to have semi open headphones so you can still hear the baby monitor go off when you're making music. I looked at the focusrite box and I believe it doesn't function as an audio interface and uses software to work, so depending on your setup it may not work for you.

If you want quality and durability, get Beyerdynamic. 770, 880, 990..you can't go wrong.

Personally I find the Beyers too bass heavy for mixing. I also find closed headphones somewhat "congested" for proper mixing (fine for DJing, though). For a little bit more money you can get a pair of semi-open AKG-701/702s. The 701 has a pretty flat response, is bright, and has good soundstaging. The catch is you need good amping to make the most of it. I use an iBasso DAC/amp connected via USB and the performance isn't too shabby. Alternatively a pair of Etymotics ER4P in ear monitors would also be good for the same purpose. It has lower impedance and any desktop or laptop whould be able to drive it. The ER4P is one of the flattest in ear monitors I know.

hhmmm...no not really. they seem to be around 2x as much as the others.

so far i think im leaning towards the m50s....im reading A LOT of good comments about them.

while im on the subject let me ask this as well:

i curently have a pair of sony mdr-v500.

i dont think theyre giving me an accurate sound (i dont think theyre even supposed to). how much better than those would the m-50s be? like i said, im not working with a lot of cash here and if the sonys are close...i might just stay with those.

at the german T they sell the Beyer for the less than the AT M50s...

hmmm....excuse my ignorance, but what is the "german t"?

im in the us and im not sure i want to purchase from overseas...what with shipping costs and things getting stuck in customs for over a month, but ill look into it.

I have a pair of Sony MDR7506 and can wholeheartedly recommend this model. Moreover, it seems that all 'pros' have used them at one point or another. I keep stumbling upon pictures of musicians from any genre, be it rock or electronic, wearing a pair of those. It's ridiculous, really.

Edit: Oh, and the mdr-500s are nowhere near in quality, so you should just take them out of the equation.
