I like to be serious, because it gets people to drop their guard, so later, when I get frivolous, I can get them to spit coffee all over their monitors/keyboards.

I have done this to hibidy numerous times.

On a serious note, it's whatever you want it to be. Pigeonholing "musician" is almost as old "what's the best"

One who makes sounds for falling trees in the forest, when no one is there to hear it.

a musician is anybody that enjoys writing music. for instance, i prefer or up to this point have) sketched instead of draw. meaning, i don't really finish anything but still love the creative process. am i less of a musician because i don't or have not yet actually finished a track? a musician isn't defined by what the musician accomplish as music is a personal thing.

at its most deepest meaning, music/writing music is most important to the person writing it. to some its like therapy. sorta like banging on a drum and yelling out how you feel. in the end, it does not matter if your the absolute worst musician, your music sucks to everybody that's heard it, everybody says you and your music sucks, and you get zero reviews on youtube, soundcloud, social media sites.

it doesn't matter whatsoever. it only matters to those who dream of becoming the best thing since sliced bread and when they fail to do so, those kind of people come to the conclusion that they suck because they base the quality of there music//feeling/meaning of it entirely on the approval of others. because nobody has the right to tell somebody there musical 'feelings/emotions" are worthless. because there not. understand that right now.

i believe what your really asking is, "what defines a professional musician?" financial success. thats a whole other ballgame. then, your music is based upon by how many people like it, that's how you get paid, and your music defines you sucess. but don't get the two mixed up. because the way i see it, evrybody has a right to express themselves.

Wow.....so many answers to my question, and some great comments too, I probably ignore some of my workmate comments, because he's one of those people who says what he likes, he made me laugh the other day, when he criticized The Beatles, saying that they were very basic at their understanding of the chords they used????????

I admit I'm more a fan of Bowie , than The Beatles, but I do rate their songs very highly, and always liked Sgt Pepper, the songs on that album and the way it was mixed, was way above it time.

At the end of the day I treat music as that added bonus in my life, just love the creativity of it.

I prefer the Zappa definition: Music is sculptured air. In that way, everyone's a musician. Thankfully, we have critics to tell us whether our sculptured air is good or not, so we won't worry about that part.

Only wankers and insecure folks feel the need to divide the world into little pieces, playing the age-old fun game of "mine is bigger than yours".
