What would be your definition of a musician?

everyone's a musician, but not everyone is a great musician, a great composer, a great producer, a great engineer and not everyone does it right for everybody else.

Yup. Fortunately just one of that kind showed up in this thread, and nobody else seems to have taken its dictates seriously.ariston wrote:Only wankers and insecure folks feel the need to divide the world into little pieces, playing the age-old fun game of "mine is bigger than yours".

this is a great thread...
it appears that some define being a musician to include themselves... today... titles do not mean anything... there are producers and musician born everyday... anyone with a computer, controller, turntable, spoons, etc can consider themselves musicians...
there are thousands of musicians born everyday... i.e. individuals buying DAWs, audio interfaces, etc...
in my opinion... if you take away the computer, DAW, audio interface, etc... are you still able to entertain an audience for a set... if not... again... in my opinion... you are not an musician... but a music maker...
i think most individuals that thinks they are musicians "today" could not be a musician... lets say 50, 40, 30, 20 years ago... the advent of computer has made it possible for individuals with the smallest inkling to make music to make music... having an inkling to make music does not make you a musician...
with all this said... a musician in my opinion... is an individual that practice, works on there skills X amount of hours "every" day... and not just turns on their equipment to write a "beat"... we are at a point where anyone could make a "beat"...
the question is... can you entertain an audience for a 45 minute set without the crutches of computers/technology... because that takes "real" skill... i.e. no quantizing/playing in the groove, no step sequencer, arps, chord finders, etc...
last point... if you cant play "Happy Birthday" on any instrument you are not a musician... in my opinion... especially... when you think you have an ear for music and "Happy Birthday" is one song you have heard the "most"!!!
i forgot to add... a DJ is not a musician... a DJ is a DJ... i.e. Disc Jockey!!!

I guess I'm not a musician then.neverenoughfunk wrote:if you cant play "Happy Birthday" on any instrument you are not a musician
That is probably the most nonsensical thing I've read in this thread.

Yes, everyone knows you have to learn "Its Not Unusual" to prove that sort of thing. Of course, this sort of screwed over all those 17th century minstrels who were writing odes to knights killing wildebeests and such before that song was ever createdrobojam wrote:I guess I'm not a musician then.neverenoughfunk wrote:if you cant play "Happy Birthday" on any instrument you are not a musician

its a small rare pavlovan mammal no bigger than your thumb, no smaller than an elephant. beig the only flying amphibious mammal its quite easy to disringuish from all other species, in that its the only mammal with wings and swimming goggles.
can be found either roosting among rocky outcroppings over lakes, or hunting among the reedbeds for insect grubs.

This is true, and not just learn to play it - you have to get the hip swiveling perfected to the point where middle-aged women throw their underwear at you mid song.debra1rlo wrote:Yes, everyone knows you have to learn "Its Not Unusual" to prove that sort of thing.robojam wrote:I guess I'm not a musician then.neverenoughfunk wrote:if you cant play "Happy Birthday" on any instrument you are not a musician

I have tried but so far only got one pair of heavily stained incontinence underwear thrown.
Guess I'm not a musician.

question... do you play by ear? if so... how many times have you heard "Happy Birthday"? if 1 + 1 = 2... i.e. if you play by ear... and heard "Happy Birthday" a trillion time... how could you not be able to play it?robojam wrote:I guess I'm not a musician then.neverenoughfunk wrote:if you cant play "Happy Birthday" on any instrument you are not a musician

i will go out on a limb here... i would have to say that 98% of what "i" consider a musician can play "Happy Birthday"... either from sheet music if they can read music... and by ear if they cant read music...
again... in my opinion... these are the skills that a "real" musician have... the ability to read music or an ear for music... i.e. play "Happy Birthday" by ear... since they have heard it a trillion times!!!
again... my point is... time has to be invested into reading music or getting you ear to a level to reproduce what you hear... just because you own a computer, software and have a soundcloud page does not make you a musician... there are certain skills that are required...
if you read my orginal post again... you could call yourself anything... i.e. rocket sciencist... the real question is... do you have the skills of a rocket sciencist? same holds true for music...
