Hi everyone,

My last synth was a SH1000 emulation. I have now added the Blue Synth which is a free VSTi phase modulation virtual synth. My latest creation is the Fractal Sequencer. This is a stand alone application which can compose music. Please see my website for details http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/pryer/ .

Cheers

Does "Standalone" mean it doesn't come in VST version?

HI.

It is not a vst but a seperate executable. It outputs midi note data to vst instruments via midi yoke or loopbe1.

OK

If a user want to use FS to control a VST that s/he has loaded in a DAW. Is that possible, and how does one go about doing that in case?

HI.

Yes it is. Use midi yoke or loopbe1. These are freeware and create virtual midi in and out ports. So for example fractal sequencer to loopbe1. Loopbe1 to daw. Thats it. It is described in more detail in the fractal sequencer user manual on my website. Hope that helps. Let me know if you need more detail.

Wow, that looks like a cool tool, I wasn't aware of it before, will check it out: http://www.nerds.de/en/loopbe1.html

Hi,

Here is a more detailes explaination. Ths approach can be uses between any midi generating software and a DAW. This is an extract from the Fractal sequencer user manual which I have updated (on my web site) as I think it deserves some attention.

USING WITH VIRTUAL INSTRUMENTS

If you want to connect the software to a virtual instrument you will need to route the midi signal internally in the PC. There is an easy way to do this.

1. Download the Freeware applications - Either Midi Yoke or LoopBe1. For internal PC midi routing I recommend Midi Yoke http://www.midiox.com/or LoopBe1 http:///www.nerds.de which is also excellent. Install either application.

2. Set the Midi output of the Fractal Sequencer to LoopBe1 (internal midi) or Midi Yoke - port 1.

3. Set your DAW (sequencer/recording software) midi input to LoopBe1 (internal midi) or Midi Yoke - port 1

4. You can now transfer midi between the applications!

Please note Windows only allows 10 active midi devices. So although you can add more drivers - windows itself will not be able to access them for use! This is a windows limitation and not well documented. Be careful Midi Yoke can use up to 8 slots.

Hi Again,

Just updated the software to include Fractal Image generation. This is a major new module and can produce high resolution Images. Thought you all might like to see the images on my website and in the Fractal sequencer user manual. The Images drive the sequencer.

Is there a demo version available for the Fractal Sequencer ?

Post

Hi.

I have just finished the code. I think it would be useful to create one. maybe limit the image size and midi sequence length. Ive been working on this on and off for 10 years. How do you think i should restrict the demo version?

Thanks

Hm, difficult question.
So it creates MIDI sequences based on the creation of fractals ?
From my (very little) experience with fractals it can take quite a bit of time till they evolve to something 'beautiful' or ?
So i'm not sure if limiting the MIDI sequence length (to a short time) would give a true impression.

I recently checked out another demo, MIDIGuitar
http://www.jamorigin.com/midi-guitar/Wi ... index.html and they did it this way with their demo that MIDI output only works for a short time but you could trigger a simple internal synth for unlimited time to get a uninterrupted impression.

Just an idea that came to my mind, at the end it's totally up to the dev (you) of course how to choose the restriction. :)

Hi.

What i have found is that the interesting sequences occur early in the iteration as non divergent values oscillate after a while. So in fact its the reverse. The trick is how the series is mapped to midi notes and what rules are availabe to constrain notes. Rules such as scale. Timing. Chords etc. That makes the sequence much more human like.

Nice thing is the software allows the user to explore different sequences quickly.

Hope that helps.

Hi Stuart,
Congrats on completing this fractal sequencer and getting it on the market! This kind of thing is right up my alley and it looks great, and I'm just chiming in to express interest in an OSX version though that's probably a longshot, right ?
I've bookmarked your page though :) good luck

Hi Stuart, I'm very interested in this software too!
Do you have any video or audio of the music you have made with this?

It would help me decide seeing as there is no demo available.

cheers
