'A/V sequencer'?

I was making a little video to go with a song and was thinking how incredibly cool it would be to be able to launch video clips in time and in sync to music, to be able to automate video clips and effect just like audio, and have them be incorporated into the song, so the song from its inception is also a video piece of artwork. Anyhow if anyone know of anything like this. I use Live BTW.

Disclaimer: I have no experience in this field!!!
Live's video capabilities are very basic. Last time I checked Live could only load one kind of Video file (AVI?) and has only basic editing capabilities. I never even checked if it you can load video clips into session view.
I wonder if anyone has put together some kind of VJ system using Live's session view to control Jitter via M4L... Jitter is very capable when it comes to video... but of course there will be a learning curve.
You may also want to check out Resolume and vvvv. I know people who have used both for live video/graphics stuff.

Cool, I'll check out vvvv which is in my price range, are there any others anyone could recommend? Anyhow, I was just thinking how cool it would be in Live's clip paradigm, maybe one day it will morph into that.

That wouldn't likely let you launch clips in real time, that is the sort of thing I am imagining, the same dynamic play you can have with audio in Live but with video too, just a new dimension open to create with.LawrenceF wrote:Sync a video editor to your DAW?

Ah, you want to randomly "trigger" video clips like triggering loops or whatever., got it.
It wouldn't surprise me if something like that actually existed somewhere but yeah, no clue what that might be. Sounds interesting though.
A quick google turned this up... http://lividinstruments.com/software_celldna.php

VJ software exists that can do that side, but not coupled with a DAW that can be played like a musical instrument. I'm guess we would have heard about it around here if it didLawrenceF wrote:Ah, you want to randomly "trigger" video clips like triggering loops or whatever., got it.

Hey braj;
I see (if you're interested in vvvv) that you're using Windows; so my initial thought is not relavent to you're situation,
but in case anyone else (using Mac OSX) is checking this thread and interested; ImXIntel is very much like what braj is asking for, and free!
http://image-ine.org/
I LOVE this app and use it tons.
You can load as many clips as you want, and select/control which one (or more) plays, the speed, loop start, loop length, play position, volume, and a ridiculous number of other parameters/effects all from MIDI, OSC, HID Devices, Wacom Tablets, built in LFO's (which can in turn be controlled with the previously mentioned), sound (!), another movie's play position, a randomization generator, the list goes on (!!!).
It's a serious beauty of an app, not to be missed by anyone interested in working with video, period ( imo
).
There's all kinds of other stuff it does; layering, transitions, clip sequencing; it's nuts.
So suffice to say it's easy to control and sync video using ImXIntel with a DAW.
Easy to set up, and a blast to experiment with.
NEVERTHELESS......; I'd be super surprised if you (braj) can't get vvvv to do what you want.
I'm also of the understanding that the extended version of Pure Data has video playback options that may satisfy your clip triggering fantasies.

Mixcraft has video functionality as well, but I have never used it so far, thus I can't tell if it is any good. On their site it says:
Mixcraft 6 is not only a powerful audio workstation - it's a fantastic tool for scoring and editing video. Load and edit video files and still images with ease. Easily cross−fade from one video clip to another, add transitions, and other video effects. Create slideshows from your photo collection. Add titles and scrolling text. Remix the audio, add a soundtrack, and effortlessly render your video project to popular formats for creating your own DVDs or uploading to YouTube™ and other popular internet video sites.

Livid CEll DNA does look like what I want, though it's $150. I'm messing about with the demo right now. It would give me a good use for Max4Live.
Edit: I dunno. I don't think this is it for me.

Yeah all of those are beyond what I really want to spend I think.
Anyhow, this has gotten me looking at some software that I hadn't known of before, one pretty cool one is something like a modular video synth called Magic, and it's pretty cheap! I'm liking the demo, the only thing it really lacks for me to buy today is saving the video output. I think I will finally buy Fraps though since it is so handy and so many of these types of apps and plugins don't have video capture included.

It does let you launch scenes via midi so I can assign the same controller to this as what I use to launch scenes in Live, so they will nicely be in sync. And it is only $29.95. Fraps is $38 so together it is still cheaper than anything else I have looked at (excepting free) and I think gets real close to what I want. Yipee!
EDIT: I went ahead and bought Fraps, and made this kaleidoscope preset. It is pretty cool, this is really about what I wanted, the only real drag is there are no transitions between presets, so it is abrupt if you switch things via midi, unless all the presets are visually similar enough to make it look seamless. Mandalas seem to work well like this so it may work well enough for my needs, I am just fooling around anyhow.
EDIT: I talked to the developer and he said a 1.1 version with transitions should be in public beta very soon, subscribe to their mailing list for more info
I'm stoked on this app, for what I need and the way I work it is perfect, it feels a lot like MUX or Traktion's rack filters.
