You have 4 rotaries and 4 buttons where you can assign 99,9% of your parameters in a defined range (unipolar, bipolar, full midi range 0-127 or only partially like 32-57 (lower value - higher value) or vice versa.
The only precondition is that you put all your devcies into one combinator or the insert slot (which acts exactly like a combinator). There you can route up to 10 parameters to the 4 rotaries and knobs per used device inside of the programmers matrix. You are able to assign more than 1 parameter to one of the above. Eg. you can assign your filter cutoff to rotary 1, then resonance, maybe makeup gain and if you like env amt and the decay value of the envelope. Tweak them to taste and you have full control over all of them with only one rotary. I love that. The more I use it the more I get structured in predefining the parameters (I hope that makes sense).
I built my LCR HAAS insert that way which has grown in time in terms of complexity and modulation capabilities. The idea behind that was that I needed something that is going to hard pan one channel to the left or right and put a modulated delayed version of it on the opposite site.
Now I have the following controls:
Button 1: left/right (this one defines which channel is for the non delayed signal)
Rotary 1: delay time in ms from 1 to 50 for the delayed signal - the opposite of button 1 ( this one creates depth )
Rotary 2: gain control for the delayed signal
Rotary 3: iirc some kind of eq or low pass filter cut off control
Rotary 4: make up gain (for fast adjustments)
Button 2: not used right now
Button 3: I labeled this one COLOR because this one wil modulate the delayed signal in different kind of ways like diffusion etc. This is for "waveshaping" the signal to minimize phasing issues if the stereo mix should be collapsed to mono.
Button 4: not used right now.
Btw everything is built up from scratch with a few audio & cv splitters and the needed devices like The Echo, an eq and so on. So if you are willing to do so you can customize nearly everything and construct mixing devices that will fit your need (like a M/S device or a "Multi Band [*** insert what ever you can imagine off ***]" or even both at once) in one combinator.
