At some point, yes.

ok reposted this file because of unsatisfied mp3 conversion.

imo, there are two ways of distortion, the good and the bad.

the first file was a 16 bit file converted in soundcloud,i needed to lower the volume to -3 db because it was just unacceptable to listen.

the second sound file is the same except i converted the 16 bit file to 32 bit on my comp.
i did not lower the volume and there are some clippings that i can ignore but the conversion is way better.
the file was encoded in soundcloud as well.

the differences are maybe not too obvious but the first file created baad artifacts in the high range something that i would strongly consider as cheap and ugly.

ignore the volume differences,i leave the first file for a while, listen to yourself and sorry for the ot.

never upload a 16 bit file to soundcloud! (lol)

Post

i always use 24 bit.

yes i've read it but i think it doesn't matter if 32 or 24 bit except it will take much longer, haha.

I have a few VintageVerb examples up on SoundCloud, and the difference between the original file and the SoundCloud conversion is dramatic. And sad.

SoundCloud encodes the audio as 128 kbps MP3. For all .mp3 files below 192 kbps (IIRC), the stereo information for the high frequencies is tossed out, and is replaced by a mono file with stereo amplitude differences. This makes a hash of all the nice stereo phase differences I put into ValhallaVintageVerb, and results in a much narrower stereo image, with most of the depth gone. I thought I was getting all snobby audiophile when I first heard the SoundCloud versions of my files, but it all comes down to the lower quality MP3 encoding that is used.

It would be interesting/instructive to put a Sanctuary example up on SoundCloud, and compare it with the original sound file. Sanctuary uses some specific signal processing tricks to get a deep stereo image, and I doubt that these would come through in a mono audio file with amplitude differences.

interesting that you say this.

in my example i like the glitchy bitcrushed peaks and they are carefully clipped and not crushed.
on soundcloud it sounds a tad more like the signal is clipped and aliasing is going on.

well, distortion is a matter of taste and i like more "spiky" distortion.

however,i guess i have to rethink when posting on soundcloud.
change distortion strategy or replace the upper frequency with a mono audio file with amplitude differences directly in the source file, lol.

Start using dropbox or box.net. Although I am not sure of the exact bandwidth allowances if you get high traffic. I you are only using one account to post short examples in the KVR forum it should work fine I think. I think if you allow downloads of the file, it is the file as it was, without soundcloud's streaming conversion compression. I know you can download the wav file if that is what you originally uploaded (unless that is a premium feature?).

Post

It's 2013. There should be no lossy compression. Instead, we have more. Devo.

Post

Soundcloud is what is popular with the kids these days :hihi: I looked into it and it's strange to say the least. Box (as mentioned) allows for full wavs now (used to be mp3 only) It's not really cool with visual where you can post little comments, but it works. I can't remember the files size allowance. I haven't run out though yet.

Post

you are perfectly right and usually i use box.net but what about posting sound at the most prominent page?
if anybody is looking for you they'll search at the cloud.

whatsoever,
i made a "experiment" and converted an 128kb mp3 in adobe soundbooth cs5 and avoided any clipping, soundbooth does this quite well, not much spikes.

soundcloud did just a 128kb mp3 to 128kb mp3 encoding,i thought it shouldn't change anything.

listen to it here.

https://soundcloud.com/t3toooo/vvverb-test-session

while it should be only -1db at maximum it seems to have less bass or is less compressed than the 32bit file.
the verb tails are much more defined.

for now i think this sound the best.

i'll stop now.it's anyway only a uncutted test.

aaarrg.

Post

i heard the best results come from uploading wav files, can anybody confirm?

or is it better to upload ur own crappy 128kps copy?(which would be presumably better than their even crappier encoding)
Has anybody ever really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like?
