I think that's pretty much the NI scam... They don't actually update their flagships, ever, and even the updates aren't really updates. Normal vendors would call that the 2.0.0 to 2.0.1 update, not 2.0-to-3.0-as-part-of-Komplete-12.0-to-13.0-update... I upgraded from Kontakt2, Reaktor5, Absynth3 and Massive to Komplete7, and that was $300 worth of "meh..." if I've ever seen it, it's hard to believe that some of those updates were supposedly 2 major versions upstream...

The last time I was blown away by an NI flagship update was Kontakt1-to-Kontakt2 (although Reaktor4-to-5 gets honorable mention, but then it was all downhill after 5.15). This from somebody who was buying NI plugins back when they were $300-$500 each and there was no such thing as Komplete... Then they include 1,000,000,000,000 presets for you to use, but only 3 of them are useful in real music, and the rest are goofy avant garde one-note-symphony douchebaggery...

But don't mind me, I'm just a jaded old timer :D

Oh my god.. I can't stand komplete 8. I mean you can't do shit with it. It's so underdeveloped, BADLY needs upgraded. I mean, 13,000 sounds? Psssh. All the sounds suck. It's impossible to tweak or edit anything because it needs updated. Some of the interfaces are too small, some are too green, some smell like spinach.

Battery? Hasn't been updated in YEARS. That's like, an eternity in the technology world. It's envelopes aren't flexible enough, and it only comes with a few thousand samples. You can't do shit with those samples because the effects are too digital sounding.

Reaktor? Hasn't been updated in YEARS. It only comes with what, 70 synths, samplers, groove-boxes, and effects? Horrible. And it only has 3000 additional ensembles to download in the library. They all suck because Reaktor is old.

Massive? Don't even get me started on that. It's such an ugly duckling. Horrible tiny knobs and the noises it makes are static, uninspiring, and straight up two-dimensional. 1300 sounds? Pssssh. You can't do shit with those sounds. Even if you tweak 8 custom-assigned macro-controlls it's not going to do anything to the sound.

Well, I'm glad I acted swiftly on that :)

Sorry to those who missed out

In other news, NI has something new to show us soon

Seems like Komplete 9 is coming quite soon. There's a Facebook Like & Share competition going around where they'll be giving it away. Don't think it's a typo...

I don't think I agree with much of this. Reaktor 5 was a huge update years back and even just last year the 5.8 update was incredibly useful due to OSC being usable now in plug-in mode. Reaktor has been constantly developed as well as new synths and effects for it. Absynth 5 had some incredibly useful stuff with the morphing and randomization, new effects etc. It breathed new life into that one and essentially gave infinite new presets because the randomization and mutating yields pretty great results quite often. With FM8 it's been a while, but what more can they do to that thing? It's so feature packed and does what it does quite well and does so with almost no CPU. I'd almost like that to remain unchanged. I'm a bit surprised that Massive hasn't seen an update yet but who knows maybe it's being worked on. It's still one of the most popular soft synths in existence so it's not exactly hurting for new features, though that's the one where I can name some changes I'd like.

Obviously they've been focusing on Maschine, Sample Packs, and development of these new things that are being teased (New VA Monark and battery 4 likely). But I still don't agree that the old stuff hasn't had useful updates in the last years. Even Kontakt 5 is only a couple years old and the updated features have provided sample developers the ability to make some pretty incredible scripted instruments.

Haha, I thought you were serious until I read "It only comes with what, 70 synths, samplers, groove-boxes, and effects? Horrible. And it only has 3000 additional ensembles to download in the library."

So if 9 is out soon, will they do a super cheap 8 sale?

It's been super discounted for a while now. For example Ultimate is 699 instead of 1099 at the moment. I think the regular one is 399 instead of 599.

Post

The only thing missing right now is the Komplete 8 Crossgrade.

I hope for others' sake that they bring that back, either for another sale on Komplete 8 or for Komplete 9.

I'm very happy with Komplete 8 right now and I don't really feel like I'm missing out on anything that's been released recently, but I'm interested to see what 9 brings.

If they give us all the fx, vintage drummer and rickenbacker bass in K9U, I'm happy.

I used to buy their additional products in-between Komplete cycles, but kinda knowing it'll be included (or not, who knows) made me wait. If I can. And lately I can wait :)

(I still have the 30 eur voucher I couldn't use for anything from upgrading to K8U)

I'm torn between what I want to spend my money on.

Either get K8 now or wait and get the latest greatest

or spend $400 on getting
synthmaster std 90, korg legacy with 61 key controller 180, OPX player 40, VB3 50 and sampletron 40 and maybe that is $360 plus S&H leaving me 40 to spend or do I get NI komplete 8 now while it is $400.

Correct answer would be to just buy it all but then when I'd be able to get the second half of that purchase may be questionable I can handle one or the other now the rest would have to wait. So what would you do.

I do agree that a lot of the sounds in K8 are geared towards trance and dance and other sounds I would not want to use and the products I just mentioned would probably end up getting used more based on the kinds of sounds I need in my music which s a mixture of YES, Genesis, Pink Floyd basically older classic prog rock with classical, neoclassical and fusion guitar greats like Dream Theater, Satriani, Di Meola, Yngwie etc.....

I'm still going to want to buy that midi guitar software for $100 upgrade my sonar to x2 $100 and add something that will do what cantabile or forte will do without paying lots of money. Maybe I want to get ReValver for $150 and Jamstix as well.

I'm still on Komplete 6, myself, plus Razor (which I don't honestly use much).

Really all I'm missing is some sample libraries (I did not even install most of the Komplete 6 libraries!) and I'm on Kontakt 4 instead of 5.

This week was the first time I saw a third-party sample library I was semi-interested in that required Kontakt 5.

It would take some pretty special upgrades in Kontakt 9 to convince me to upgrade to it...

I agree with this 100% but your figures are a little exaggerated....

A few too many zeros on the end there Senor...

They actually include around 1,000,000,000 presets for each synth, but only 3 of them are actually useful in real music...

The rest are goofy avant garde one-note-symphony douchebaggery and totally funking useless
