Remember this folks..?

In case you dont, it's an old (but still good) granulator effect from the Smartelectronix folks. Obviously being an old plugin it's 32 bit only, but like I said - still good.

Anyway...

I just discovered it's become a payware effect, now called "Salty Grain". It's 64 bit now too, but apart from that and a new GUI, it looks pretty much the same as the old one - and according to the description on their new website, it does the same thing as the old one too.

Oh, before I forget... They're charging 69 Euros for it.

I always like Smartelectronix and supported them whenever I could, but this re-hashing of old freeware into payware has completely changed my mind about them.

To be fair to the SampleSumo crew, KTGranulator was never freeware. It was donationware. Everybody who donated in the past has been contacted for special treatment.

It's a shame that the original isn't available anymore, but I'm pretty sure anybody who wanted it has already got it, and I'm sure there are plenty of people who are happy to pay for a supported 64-bit version. Seems a reasonable price for the 8 years of donation-free enjoyment I've had here.

But charging 69 Euros for what is basically a 64 bit "upgrade" of ten-year-old code is, in my opinion, a little excessive.

The freeware/donationware point is moot as nobody was forced to donate. Having said that, it is good that they're looking after previous "donators".

I bought a few Smartelectronix VSTs, none of which I use now, but I never donated for this, so I guess I'm missing out.

Anyway, I don't want to start an argument or be accused of flaming, just wanted to comment.

it's very inspired by the granulator in audiomulch. just in case that isn't obvious.

if you want something a little different the soundhack plug ins are great and do granular/phase vocoding in interesting ways. plus, they sound different to a lot of what's out there.

Thanks for pointing me to that thread cron. I see it's old news already.

From reading that thread I see they've done some extra work under the hood, and they have families to feed (me too). Does this justify the price? Maybe. Not really for me to say though.

Then there's the support/updates. Isn't it still at version 1..?

I know they're good guys and talented developers, and I wish them luck with it. But as others have said - 69 Euros ($93.35) is too steep. Especially when you consider what else you can get for that these days - almost two Valhalla Verbs for e.g. (How much is Reaper again?)

Ok... I've said enough.
