Not sure if this is the right forum for genre questions but here goes...

I recently saw this new preset pack from FXpansion: http://www.fxpansion.com/index.php?page=200

It says "for modern genres such as Neuro, Trap and Dubstep".

Dubstep: ok, love it or hate it, most people should know of that by now. And I think I have a handle on Trap.

But what is Neuro???

I see an electronic artist named Neuro. Is that what they mean? I can't find much info on the 'net that this is actually a genre. Can anyone clue me in?

Also, general question: Are there any good websites for staying on top of the latest subgenres of electronic music? I am always curious about these things, but often can't seem to get a clear, music theory viewpoint on what all these new genres actually are.

After 25 years of listening to a huge variety of music genres, most of the time when I listen to a "new" subgenre I think "I have heard this dozens of times before". I like to try to understand why people think something is new, and to understand the "etymology", but it's been difficult...

Thanks for the response. I should have mentioned I had found that wikipedia page, but it says " which emerged between 1997 and 1998", while FXpansion was talking about Neuro as a "modern genre". I didn't think a 15 year old genre would be considered modern?

Maybe this is some kind of re-invention of neurofunk with influence from today's electronic music. Or maybe it's just some BS marketing.

That's only about 3 or 4 years longer than dubstep has been around. Genre names tend to stick regardless of what the music does. I imagine the neuro stuff back then sounded as different to the neuro stuff of today as old dubstep does to new. Same deal with house, techno, etc etc...

Ok, I buy that. I'll learn more about neurofunk then. Thanks guys 8)

Fortunately, you can use the same presets.

What is "trap" then? These manufactured genres just seem to get sillier.

"Trap" is Admiral Ackbar's favorite genre.

It's a variety of dirty south rap that's hit the big time thanks to Lady Gaga and others borrowing bits from it. It's not really a genre as such - it's kinda the new gangsta as it's grown out of people rapping about drug dealing and stuff, which is how it got its name - but has become associated with a certain, fast, hi-hat style and ostentatious string arpeggios.

Oh well I don't even know what "dirty south" is tbh. It's all rap then basically? Lady Gaga I tend to ignore anyway.

This is because "new" subgenres are invented by young people who don't have 25 years of historical perspective. Everything is new and exciting to them.
