theremin?
had a new and unique way of being played i guess.
even synths stick to the old kb system in the norm.
whats the point in spending time inventing a new instrument, when all you would get is old guitarists and keys players telling you it wasnt really an instrument, more of a toy...

There seems to be something like that on KVR's front page at the moment.highkoo wrote:SJ_Digriz wrote:Yes, they sound fabulous. But F that!
That made me wonder-
Do we still invent real instruments?
Is anyone doing that?
Even if the piano player can't play, keep the party going.

luckily I missed all the wars but the thing is music these days is lacking enough skilled players. I think rather than focusing on trying to find a sound I would rather focus on improving my playing both feel and technique and work on ones ear as well. The research I have done on synths is complete and I will be visiting these pages a lot less there is no joy in being a fanboy for me. I came here to try and learn the sounds of synths and research which would do the best job for the type of music I like. I made up my mind and am going to buy them. What I like you may not like. I like vintage and progressive rock sounds from bands like YES genesis and pink floyd etc as well as hard rock bands and shredders.
We can use sounds that others developed and most people like that have proven to be adequate for professional purposes. There are reasons those bands did well and I would love to copy the sound of a YES or Genesis etc. Nobody else seems to be writing that level of music these days. Maybe if we spent more time becoming better musicians instead of producers we could approach that level of proficiency with our music.
Dream Theater and Symphony X are close to what yes and Genesis did but they seem to focus on playing fast every time they get a chance to do so. I want to hear music that crosses over to all people and unites all the listeners even those who are not world class shredders that can cover every band out there.
Shred is cool in moderation and I love to shred but the idea is to focus on the song and write and play what is needed to make the song a better song first not to act like an egomaniac and play fast all the time. Anyone who can play fast can do that all the time if they want to. To me its far more interesting to play at a mixture of tempos and shift at interesting places to create a piece of music that transports the listener into new territory.
Most of the so called new sounds are extremely familiar sounding to me there really isn't a lot of new stuff coming out that isn't similar in a lot of ways to what has been produced in the past. The originators were those who did the exploration on synths decades ago.
We can geek out on the newest greatest vsti and hardware but its still going to have a tough time competing with a proven vintage tone generator from the past or those emulations everyone is so hot for. An old m1 and a moog and a yamaha vl1 combined in a set up could produce as strange and wonderful a sound as any producer today could and probably sound a lot better but certainly not for the same $$$. Yeah it took a lot of $$ to get gear that could sound good back in the day. You had to have separate FX gear and sometimes you had to have a rack just for FX.
The best musicians rose to the top the rest dreamed about it a lot and nowadays half ass players can spend a grand and have the gear they need to play and produce a CD. Is that a bad thing? Not unless your listening to a lot of those half ass musicians and believe me I think there are more bad players making it big these days there use to be.
Synthmaster on a laptop with a cheap controller and audio interface can plug into a rented PA and allow anyone to play out. You probably already have the laptop and if you want to add another keyboard the korg microstation is $400 or less used. most DAWs can provide additional pro quality sounds to improve the level of synth beyond the free ones and we all know the free synths today are more than adequate so that you can create great music.
But to act like the sounds of today are so much better than those of the past is dumb because everyone is still trying to sound like their favorite players and no matter who they are old or new your still copying someone 99% of the time because you got inspired from someone else's playing and sound. Wakeman had his hero too. We still haven't seen players that can write as well as Bach and Beethoven IMHO.
Grab your own sound and go but the thing is your sound is still going to end up being very similar to something someone else did and it will get compared to others. They say Solomon was the wisest man in the world and we all know what he said about nothing under the sun being new so be happy with the sound you get and make it work and if you can do more with less people will be far more impressed because of it.

Ah! I didnt think of that one!vurt wrote:theremin?

Still though, I think it was basically inspired by technology.
Which, is not a bad thing at all.
I was just wondering why we dont see oddball string instruments, or custom woodwinds and stuff. But, Im basically totally ignorant in that area, so maybe we actually do!
What about all the zany instrument names that Dr. Seuss came up with? Lets make some of those!
I mean, everything prolly sounded shit until someone learned how to play it!

Oh Im sure thats true.
But then, musicians would have yet another frontier on which to choose to be either an 'old head' or a 'young upstart'.
Geez the front page is huge now!mumpcake wrote: There seems to be something like that on KVR's front page at the moment.

I don't know, there' the Eigenharp and a few other doodads around. That wont work for most of this crowd because 1) they are expensive 2) they are hard to play well.
If you have to ask, you can't afford the answer

Modern sound? A tiresome 909 sampled kick, a bassline that is overwhelming [if it even makes it thorough the limiter and multiband compression], some nasty noisy sounds that people think is "progressive" and "cool", and lots of pitch-banding and modulations, all stuffed into 2dB of dynamics.
That is what "modern" music sounds like. Sorry, but that's pure shi**.
More nice lyrics, more nice melodies, more *meaning* especially is needed. Not more sexual aspirations and completely and utterly shallow lyrics that only give you an erection, or make you steal, or in some cases work like a slave to achieve the goals you don't really need to be happy.
Oh, and getting rid of the brickwall on the output, to get rid of all the distortion finally.
I simply cannot believe what majority of people consider "mastered" these days... it sounds so terrible I just refuse to listen to it. It's like listening to a track through a Marshall with SM57 on it...
p.s. just for the record - I love 909 and 808, but there's so much to them then just using the samples. They are ultimate drum machines in my opinion, but you have to use them, and tweak them, yourself. They are instruments.
