Thanks. I thought it was also doing something slight to the low end as well.

OK how about harmonics? I strongly suspect that there's a good reason why the dev that was contracted to do this plugin is a tube algo hotshot.

No, this the hardware this is modeled on is a mastering EQ. Analysis shows THD at -162dB. No harmonics here, just very fine tuned curves.

I guess with a plug-in like this you are paying to have Scott's knowledge and skill in a simple and easy to use plug-in.

Here is something interesting, by the time your controls are up at 1 O'clock you've already applied a 1dB gain to the whole spectrum besides what you are doing to the high end.

As you all know, 1dB louder = better. So that's partly why it sounds good. But I see no reason why Equality with the same curve wouldn't sound just the same if not better.

AFAIK there are a couple of things to get right in an EQ.

1. Cramping. This is where your bell curve starts to deform when you get to the high frequencies. See picture below of the SPL Passeq does (It's shape changes as you go higher, but I am not sure if this is the same thing).

This doesn't make it sound bad, it's just not the curve you see in the analog domain. It's happening because you are reaching Nyquist. Oversampling is employed by some to solve this problem, but others do it without over sampling (Brainworx Digital V2)

2. Phase distortion. I don't know much about this but I understand it's different from normal phase shift. This is I think phase shifts that are irregular?

And there are more things but as far as what you hear I think this is it.

I've heard from others that DMG Equality in it's Analog mode passes and I guess you can say basically is an analog EQ for practical purposes. And so does PSP Squad. I am sure there are more. FF ProQ apparently suffers phase distortion.

I don't know if anyone could even hear most of these differences, but I did really like the analog mode on Equality, it sounded better than the other modes, so maybe you can, or maybe it's placebo.

If anyone knows how to do more tests on EQ let me know. If nothing else it's interesting to know which developers get everything right (as they all say they do).

Is this cramping here? Because when you move the bell around it changes shape, but it starts to change or *cramp*

I don't think you can call the Passeq a successful or 1:1 emulation if it is, I doubt the analog counterpart looks like this.

Also that steep drop, looks like a brickwall filter to filter out aliasing. It moves higher when you up the sample rate. It's a brickwall filter by the looks of it.

Equality sounds pretty damn good with that same curve.

What are you using to track your EQ? edit VST analyzer.

When i demoed this one i felt it has a color like the Virtual Tube Pre Amp it have a bit harsh sound, the original hardware is really smooth and open ! Not sure about that eq the other plugin is pretty good the Ubk 1 one

Anything particularly magical on the graph when clariphonic does low boost?

Definitely on my to-buy list, but it's not 64bit yet, and I'm saving my pennies for EQuilibrium...

I'm not sure it does a low boost.

Interesting.. Didn't know that. I assumed the Focus knob does something to the low end (seems what the manual suggested anyway)

I really thought it did too, but the graph above shows not so much.

manual? Where's that? I only see 'workin on it' on there site.

It's doing a low boost alright but it's flat all the way down. It's just turning the volume up basically.

Here is the thing, if I knew EQ well enough I'd not need anything else other than a good EQ like Equality.

But until I do I rely on things like the Passeq.

With Clariphonic it is interesting how it boosts when you increase the controls, it's not just adding to the same band all the time it's a number of bands and the shelf. It's definitely fine tuned for good results.

Makes you realize just how much can really be done with EQ if you know how to use it right.

SPL Passeq to the Clariphonic & probably everything else inbetween!

I will say though that I doubt I'd get rid of the MAAG, it's probably one of the most interesting EQ's I've seen, every control changes the whole curve. That one I think they really got right. Even "flat" is not actually flat, it has slight deviations in the curve. I was watching a video of the designer of Maag, he's called Maag (pronounced MÄG, not Mag like Magazine or Magnum). He mentioned each bandpass being flat within 2/10's of a dB, which is pretty much exactly what the plug-in looks like flat. There is also no cramping on the Maag or the Digital V2.

The manual I was looking at was for the hardware, which is online on the site I believe

Cool, I have seen that.

Thanks,
