neither mulab nor studio one can see VSTs. Do I need to install anything extra?

Both are pointed to the right directory.
In S1, they are not listed under instruments.

In mulab, if I select the .dll (example, oatmeal.dll) it says 'invalid VST plug-in.

Super newbie question, but still :).

I don't think Oatmeal has any dependencies(dot net, directx, etc)

so it's probably well something...

Haven't used those hosts, so unless you posted a series of screenshots its better left to someone who has used those.
