Very happy with my presonus audiobox 22vsl. It comes in a bigger version if you need more i/o (44vsl).

Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 (the 2i2 doesn t have midi)
the best bang for the buck.

You cant go wrong with the Focusrite Interfaces -- the 2i2 has no midi though depending on that being an issue .. if you can stretch further I really recommend the Roland UA55 Quad Capture. The sound quality is unbelievable for the price

I may actually sell my RME UCX and Quad to buy the Roland Octo.

If your in the UK and interested send me a PM and we could maybe organise a sale for the same price bracket as the 2i2. All boxed and like new.

I have questions about audio interfaces, and I thought it might be better to ask in this current thread than revive an ancient one, or start a new one:

How will an audio interface help, particularly in the following ways?

- My computer already has a line/mic-in and is capable of mixing 48khz audio with no problem.

- I do get audio hiccups during playback if I have other programs (most of all firefox or torrents) running. Would an audio interface stop that from happening?

- I get latency when using my midi controller whenever my mixes get big, because I'll have to crank up the buffer. Will an audio interface solve that?

- I get latency when routing my bass amp into my PC. Will an audio interface help get rid of that?

- I prefer to not use asio4all because it disables audio from all programs besides my DAW. Will the benefits of an audio interface remain even if I don't use asio, and use the default MME/ Directx?

The main benefit you are going to have is that the external audio interface will have (or should have, check for that) a dedicated asio driver, which will not have the asio4all limitations. In order to achieve a low enough latency that you can basically neglect it during recording, there's no way around ASIO.
