Is it possible to screw the middle pickup a bit down so it gets farther away from the strings? That should reduce the output a little.
I didn't know about those p-rails...thanx for the links...I would not want the higher output ones though. Like I said this is not a problem at all, it's all just contrast and that's good. I do have one problem, the damn strings are too new :hihi:

FTR I fell in love with the idea of a baritone in 1998 when I sold Dan Electro's, we had some of the baritones and I loved the range but hated the concept of being stuck with just lipstick pups. In the tele body I had 4 different pup combos (all duncans except for the stock chrome humbuckers that came with the squire tele). Each had it's pros and cons, but all of them sound best when the neck pup is in use with or without the bridge pup...the bridge pup can be very bright. I think I have done a good job of getting the best of all the pups that came before these.

You see in 2009 the idea hit me that I could build a baritone with a squire for under 500 dollars by getting the neck from Warmoth. After that all I used from the squire was the body and pickguard everything else was swapped out with parts I had for the most part (I did buy a bridge) and did keep it under 500 dollars (the neck alone was 200 dollars). I played it a lot at first but tbh the weight was a deterrent at times because it didn't balance well in my lap it does now though (I called it my sledge hammer because it weighed like 10 1/2 pounds). Now the weight and balance is a joy to play.

No one has noted there are no strap pins yet, I think the upper pin will go on the back of the horn and not the tip but I haven't decided yet. :)

volume difference resolved, I'm confused but it's resolved. Human error wiring the on/on/on switch...the red and white wires were in place, the output and ground was all in place as the jumper needed. The main out of the pup attaches to the same lug as the output to the 5-way switch and it was not attached. It didn't break off because the wires had no solder and the braid was loose. SO why was it more powerful on one setting while working on the others? Why was it louder on one setting? I would think it would run in one mode only with the main out not connected but it's fine now.

I also ordered a Burns Steer to get my Billy Bragg fix.

Uggggggggg. Looks like I'll have to order online if I want to try those "balanced tension" strings Dean mentioned. I still don't get it as to why the lower tension (9-40 is LOWER tension) how one string being higher is going to give me "balanced tension".

I'm going to try them anyways. I gotta drop my gauge on the main gueetars because even the heavier bottoms are causing more tendinitis.

EDIT: The dude from D'ardarrio chimed in over at SS so I understand what they mean by balanced. So, I think prolly I don't see a need as 9-42 or 46 plays fine to me. I not good enough a player to stray from string sets any long. 9-42's will have to do.

Hink wrote:the baritone is done...Two p-rails wired with all four options (p90, hotrail single coil, humbucker both parallel and series), the middle pup is a duncan jb jr wired with an on/on/on series/split/parallel. The third knob is not a tone control it's an Artec QDD2 pre-amp which is a 5-way rotary switch with bypass and 4 types of gain (plus a global trimpot). The 5 way strat switch is wired B>B/N>N>M/N>M. So eletronically I have the bases well covered imo and then some, or as I call it "the swiss army knife" of baritones. The tone control uses and orange drop cap as well.

The body is alder, I could have gotten a better cut of wood but I'm not complaining...I really was set on the sunburst from the start. Note on the back (which I should have polished ) is a double battery box so I'm 18v ready though right now it's only 9v. I want to play it at 9v for a bit then make it 18v and then determine whether I want a switch between 9 and 18v or just hardwire it 18v. I really like the contour cuts on the body both front and back (I need to take better pics of the back, you cant see the contours) and how it sits in my lap. (the tele neck imo works well with this body)

Before when I had the tele body this thing weighed a ton, more than a Les Paul but now it's much lighter and I even used metal pup rings. Of course it will take a while to get to know all the tones but it sounds great and there is a nice contrast of tones going through the options. The action is much better than with the tele body, the squier neck pocket was poorly done but this is perfect. Intonation was not an issue at all

It's tough getting good pics with my flash, I need studio lighting. But...

yes I'm shamelessly bumping my post, but with this pic of the first version of the baritone

I love old Tele Deluxes. Someone is selling a korina Tele Deluxe body that I'm seriously considering picking up. Korina and wenge are my two favorite body woods.

yeah but in this case that body weighs exactly what the rest of the baritone with the new body weighs.

BTW about distortion from the p-rails, I think i have the solution for you. Just for S&Gs I bought one of those orange drop caps from stew mac for my other esp I pieced together, I liked it so much I bought 4 more. I put one in the baritone and I can hear the distortion you are talking about but I can use the tone and volume control to clean things up. Mind you, I am the kind of guy who takes passive tone controls out, but not anymore...the caps are huge but that's okay, they really make a huge difference imho :)

BTW get that body if the price is right :tu:

Yeah, that's one great thing about Korina, it's light. My old Japanese brand-unknown Telecaster Deluxe is super light, I imagine it's basswood which I normally don't like but it really works with the old "Power Sound" pickups for some reason.

I was in a local guitar shop of all places. And went through a bunch of Washburn jazz boxes. I hate to say it but they (mostly 335 or 175 variety) sucked. The necks were "fair" slightly thinner then a LP custom. The action was higher then expected even though the sales guy said it was "too low" They were strung with 13's and while some of the jazz tones were there it was mostly a near miss as opposed to a dead on sound.
