Hi everyone,

I'm a newbie and am astounded by the number of synths available for iOS. Many of them don't have a free version to try so I'm looking for some advice.

What's a good synth for reproducing that 70's reggae organ sound?

Great - thanks! What about lo-fi effects in garageband? I've used izotope vinyl on my main computer, so want something similar for the ipad if possible.

Or will another app work for effects?

There is a distortion available for the organs in Garageband, but I can't say that it's lo-fi. Garageband recently announced audiobus compatibility, so you MIGHT be able to send output from Garageband to an external effect but I can't say for sure. Google is your friend on this topic.

I'm afraid not, GB only attaches to the output slot of Audiobus. Ie you can record into it, but can't record or add effects to its output.

If you get Audiobus, you can use Echo Pad inside Audiobus with Garageband which is also Audiobus compatible. Although, you won't be able to run Garageband as an Input source (yet) in Audiobus.

Thanks everyone for all the replies. Echo Pad looks great for effects - I will definitely pick that up. I just picked up audiobus the other day so I'm good there. Now I just need something for the input to replicate that 70's reggae sound.

If garageband is only good for output using audiobus, what other app has some classic organ sounds that I use as an input?

For input apps with organ sounds, right now it's fairly limited but that will no doubt change very soon, since the Audiobus SDK is now public. As suggested earlier Yonac has Organ+, I can't speak for them but maybe they'll update it with Audiobus compatibility. I use their Magellan synth all the time, they make great stuff.

Also, there's a TON of people who are asking Apple for Garageband to be available as an input within Audiobus, so maybe they'll add the functionality in the next update.

In the meantime Soundprism has a nice organ sound, and has additional organ sounds you can buy as an in app purchase, although I haven't tried them yet.

The most common reggae organ was the Hammond B3. You can get sampled versions of that as soundfonts which you could then load into bs16i or gestrument

Have you tried the organ in Garageband - it's an outstanding B3 emulation. The heritage of the organ in Garageband comes from the EVB3 that is in Logic, if I am not mistaken. It's a fabulous tonewheel organ emulation, complete with decent leslie emulation.

Garageband is 5$. Just get it. The electric pianos and lead synths are also great.

Unfortunately there isn't a great way to do this until Garageband gets Audiobus Input support, assuming that they add it.

Even if Garageband allowed Audiocopy instead of being restricted to just Audiopaste, you could copy the audio into another app or directly into Echo Pad's looper to process with effects. It's a shame Apple doesn't allow at least one of these methods to easily get audio out of Garageband without having to connect the iOS device to a computer.

The Music Studio DAW app has a built in drawbar organ sample instrument, and you can add a couple more via in app purchase. They do not have minimal tweakability (less than the keys in GB), I don't know if they have the organ sound you are looking for, I think one of the upgrade B3 samples is close...
Music Studio is listed on the AudioBus site as an Input though, so you could play it through Echo Pad or Jamup for the fx.
