I'm looking for a VST step-sequencer style drum machine - or even just a step sequencer so I can route the MIDI to a drum machine - that allows hardware control of each step, so I can program it with a MIDI keyboard. Like the Redrum in Reason, only with MIDI capabilities for each step so I don't have to use the mouse.
I know I could get an Electribe from Ebay and use the MIDI out, or use iElectribe on an iPad and, but that's overkill (and super expensive), so I'm looking for VST or even a maxforlive solution if it comes to that!
Literally the only thing I've found that offers the control I want is the Image Line Groove Machine, but it's a massive CPU hog so I don't want to use it - is there anything else available?

Do you know if you can use the Arturia software without using the hardware?
I have a MIDI keyboard with several knobs that I was planning to use - but only GrooveMachine enables me to use it control the steps of the step sequencer!
