I too thought of "stripped-down P5" when I looked at this...

There are people that'll buy Kinetik that don't know about alternative synths, I'm sure.... they'll see that it's $20 less than FLS Fruityloops Ed and buy for that reason. And being closed like this also reduces support costs.

That said, it'd be nice if it supported Synth1 and Triangle2 (are there any other free DXI's out there? Rene, please release sfz DXI) and a VST-DX adapter... although adding an adapter pushes this pretty close to street price for P5 and increases support issues.

Since you're here, what's Roland's relationship with this product's development? Just curious..

Your question concerns some proprietary information that I can't discuss, but I can tell you that the Roland sounds are derived from the same engine that generates the sounds for their GrooveBoxes, and Kinetic is not just triggering samples

Which USENET group? Or do you mean the NNTP newsgroup which was actually hosted by cakewalk, and which they significantly improved upon by setting up proper web forums?

That's an astute observation. Here are a few facts that have not made it to our website yet.

Kinetic will export patterns that can be used in Project5.

Kinetic Projects can be opened in Project5.

The Roland synth that is found in Kinetic is also usable in Project5.

Yes, if your host supports ReWire. Or as previously mentioned, if your host happens to be Project5.

Are the Roland synth and PSYN usable in other DXI hosts as well (Sonar, FLStudio, Forte)?

If so, you'll probably get some sales for the instruments alone

The Roland Synths are isolated to use in Kinetic and Project5.

The DirectX effects are useable in other aps. Note these effects are the same as those found in Project5, minus Spectral Transformer.

I shot that screen shot while Kinetic was playing, notice the 16 meters that are active. Those are 16 instances of different synth patches running. That was on my 1.4 Ghz laptop, with 512 MB of RAM. I had MS Outook and Photoshop running in the Background.

You can assign ACID format loops to any of the 16 channels.

I was a beta tester for that app, I am not sure if our non disclosure agreement still applies though. All I will say for now is that the sound set appears to contain elements from both the MC-303/505.

I love Project5, but I always wished it had a "groove box" mode... this sounds like the perfect solution to that (for only $80)!

Can KINETIK itself run as a DXi within SONAR?

ReWire is nice and all but I really dislike having to save and load 2 different data files for a single project.

Went back and checked. Turns out that prior to USENET, there was a Cakewalk email list run out of the University of Colorado. Along about the 1994 timeframe, TwelveTone announced that Cakewalk was going to do digital audio. There was a bit of hue and cry about that on the list. Among the reasons for the concern was that moving that direction was going to require users to upgrade their PC's (remember, we're talking the Intel 286/386 age here, and the stuff was not cheap) and a lot of folks felt that TwelveTone was leaving them in the lurch.

In the midst of the acrimony, Hendershott appeared on the list, and the next thing subscribers saw was the UColo list being shut down, a USENET list being established (alt.music.cakewalk I think it was) and hosted in the TwelveTone network domain.

The list was pretty heavily censored by TwelveTone, and very little in the way of dissent was ever allowed to be posted. The list became the land of "Shiny Happy Cakewalk Users". In a way, it was much like Camazotz from L'Engle novel "A Wrinkle In Time", with TwelveTone playing the role of IT.

Having witnessed all that, I get downright upsided when anyone from Cakewalk posts anywhere outside their own turf. The little buggers should stay in their own domain. If this keeps up, I may have to contact Mrs. Whatsit.

(PS - NNTP or Network News Transfer Protocol is the support structure that currently enables USENET to exist. But USENET existed before NNTP was developed. My experience goes back to the "A" and "B" News days of the early 1980's. UUCP [Unix to Unix Communications Protocol] was the transport then, usually over dialup connections. I can't speak for that story you described as I came onboard a little bit after that. But let me assure you that I am only here to answer questions.

People have legitimate questions about Kinetic, and no one on the board has experience with it except for Beta Testers. I have no plans to take the board over...I have enough to do at Cakewalk.

You'll notice that I left the flames where they were and made no attempt to reply to them (with the exception of this one
