any free or open source software / vst for spectral editing?

Hi,
as in the title I was asking myself if exists for PC any free or open source VST or standalone with audio spectral editing capabilities similar to Iris or the spectral editor of Alchemy?
Even better if it has also the ability to import, besides audio files, pictures to later edit as sounds?
Any info is welcome.
Thanks a lot
Greetings

Use something like Audiopaint to convert images to sound files

Mess with the partials or resynthesise sounds to your heart's content with Spear

Thanks a lot for taking time to answer! And for the info and links.
They both will come very handy in some experimental stuff I want to do in the near future.
Many thanks again

I hope to payback soon with something around here, as I'm always finding help in this forum!
Have a nice week you all.
Lots of gratitude.

Hi and thanks again, unluckily it has limitation as demo and I was looking for a free / open source one.Karmacomposer wrote:http://photosounder.com/
Not totally free, but I believe you can use it free indefinitely.
Mike
So AUDIO PAINT plus SPEAR and/or LAOE are the best solutions.
Many thanks again

I remember that adobe was giving away an early version of audition a while back, idk if that is still around. Schwa also has a very cheap, and imo very versatile and useful spectral editor: http://www.stillwellaudio.com/plugins/s ... s/spectro/

but I downloaded Ceres now and found many interesting other tools in the Notam website thanks to you
Now my arsenal of audio editing and sound design software is really full! I am looking forward using it in a good and creative way.

Adobe gave the download link and serial weeks ago in a kinda "free" way, but it turned out to be legal just for who was already owning it and needed the download link.Panphobia wrote:I remember that adobe was giving away an early version of audition a while back, idk if that is still around. It has been discussed here an there, I guess adobe had some wrong manner of dealing with the server and were not able to close it in time just for the legal owners, or something like this, so it happened that everyone was able to download it, but as my computer is in a studio I have to have all legal license or freeware stuff, so I'll use other software, I found really plenty in this thread.
Anyway I'll give a try to Spectro too, but now I have even too much of them
Thanks a lot really to all of you.
Bests.

just to add for the interested, I found this too (I mean it was already in my vst folder but forgot it
):
http://thepiz.org/plugins/?p=Harsh%20Digital%20Nose
this is not for spectral editing obviously, but it's interesting you can drag and drop images that in some way run oscillators..so the image is causing the sound.

Should you suddenly decide you haven't got enough options allready (and others might be interested in another tool)..:
Coagula takes a slightly different approach to turn pictures into sound, and can also make or alter pictures for your listening pleasure.
Coagula takes a slightly different approach to turn pictures into sound, and can also make or alter pictures for your listening pleasure.
There's also an option for noise bandwidth, more or less noise in there among the sinewaves..What is it?
Coagula is an image synth. This means that it is both a simple image editor, and a program for making sound from those images.
How: Coagula uses one sinewave (beep) per image line, one short blip per point (pixel) on the line.
Red is left, Green is right, Yellow is green+red, so it's in the middle.
Blue makes each sine into a narrow noise-band, so you can create hard noise or organ-like sounds.
Get started: Make some marks on the black canvas. Rotate, zoom and multiply the parts. Hit F5 and hear the light.
Tools: Use Filter images to shape areas. Use Echo tool to copy pixels several times. The brush has lots of options.
Coagula is freeware.
