Mom, DUNE is spitting at me!

I think DUNE is a great synthesizer with a lot of potential. Im sure i could do a lot of nice stuff with it, but unfortunately everytime i sit down and try to do so i run into the same showstopper, namely its PWM and Square wave in general.

The main problem is the incessant 'spitting' produced by the PWM. It can be more pronounced or less pronounced depending on the various other parameters, but its always there to some degree and pretty much always enough to spoil the experience.

Another problematic element is the Square wave in general. Compared to the Square of other synths i find it to be unusually 'rough' when narrowed or widened, and especially with high resonance one usually gets the same spits/clicks/pops that the PWM produces, only not as pronounced. The ZIP linked above contains an audio example of that too. Loop it, (its perfectly cut so it wraps around perfectly), and keep comparing the first half with the second. The first half is DUNE, the second is Arturias minimoog VO. It may take a while until you start noticing the clicks/pops, so be sure to let it play for a while. The longer you listen the more obvious it gets.

The question is: Could this have anything to do with the fact that it is the BEAT edition? Or is there a bug somewhere? Of course it could be intended, but i think thats rather unlikely.

Isn't it because all your envelopes are at zero except the Amp Sustain & Release?? (at least in your image)

Wow I never noticed that before. Using the exact settings you show above I can hear the pops and "spits" too in the lower registers using the full version of DUNE. I'll link to this thread at the Synapse forums and see what Rich says......... :)

Happens even with liberal amounts of Attack and Release applied.......it's most noticeable if you hold a lower note.

No, the envs dont do anything in this preset.

(Its my INIT preset, except for what i needed to change to get the PWM going.)

Only the Amp env is actually active, but that has no influence on the problem, i.e. can not be the cause.

Thanks. So its not because it is the BEAT version.

Good idea.

Would be great if this could be 'fixed' somehow.

I remember I've had a similar problem with an initial click, but then I adjusted something, and the sound was okay. But I don't know what it really was, maybe some problem with the Unisono voices? Or was it the OSC Mix?? :?:

It's not a initial click it's a reoccurring series of pops when holding down a note. Almost sounds like rain at times. Anyway I posted at the Synapse forum..... :)

Yeah, I can easily reproduce this with the demo, its almost like an old vinyl sound, but "spitting" sounds about right. Even with the LFO modulating the PWM by +10 you can start to hear it on the lower notes. I can't say it entirely turns me off of the synth, though.

so an official statement would now
help this discussion..
Finally!

I'm sure Rich will respond......I think it's 3AM in Germany now so it may be a while...... :)

Can you post that PRESET and corresponding MIDI and I'll loaded it with the BEAT edition I have on my other Mac.

Why dont ppl post bugs in the official Synapse forum? Thats what it is there for.

There's no midi file. Just copy the settings from the screenshot above and then hold a lower note for 30 seconds.
