hi,

..been looking for a good free compressor for a long time now but i don't think it out there!? must have tried most by now.. still looking. starting to think i need to spend some money on this.. but i know you folks here can come up with some brilliant tips..

Buy the last issue of Computer Music for like 5 bucks, and included there is the really nice Hornet Fet compressor.

FXpansion have a good free comp based on their analogue modelling.

MCompressor in the Melda free bundle, Audio Damage RoughRider, Klanghelm DC1A. Together with the stuff mentioned above, you're spoilt for choice for decent free compressors. Plus you can adjust the compressor response curve in the Melda one to taste.

The Compressor in the free ReaPlugs bundle looks very basic and old-fashioned, but it's full of great features like variable Oversampling, variable Anti-Aliasing, external and internal sidechains, wet/dry, etc.

Granted, looks last-century, but it's one helluva compressor. For free.

I've grown to love DCAM freecomp a lot lately. I use it for busses and single tracks and it works for both. And TDR feedback comp (I AND II) are amazing comps, free or not! I also like Molot occasionally. There are other nice stuff from Klanghelm, VoS etc.

What they said. Density, ThrillseekerLA, Molot and TDR FB II are so good that you don't even need to buy anything these days.

Totally love TDR Feedback Compressor 2 so a big +1

We use it as a mastering compressor lately with very satisfying results.

When I read this kind of question, first reaction is: what is this person looking for?
If you just need a decent all around compressor, don't you use any sequencer? Most of the platforms include quite good compressors. If you are looking a bit better or compressor including some special character or for special purpose, better to invenst 40-80 dollars. E.g. at the moment (?) (check if this offer is still valid) very good, versatile and transparent compressor by PSP for sale at 42 bucks (Master Comp.). Several other alternatives at this price range. Better to pay a bit money and be more happy every time when you use the tool than try to get everything for free. Just skip one night at the bar or few pint or whatever you use to spend the moeny and buy a compressor. H.

I must admit that i am not a big fan of compressors because these things have the annoying tendency to never quite do what i want them to do. (lol)

But i must also say that i am quite impressed by buzzrooms GranComp and GranComp3, especially the latter. Rather than endlessly wrestling with parameters and never getting the result i want regardless, it seems that i can never go wrong just using the 'Master Hard' preset. (On the Master, of course.) I basically just slap it on and BAM, there is the effect im looking for. Perfect for the stuff i do, and if my gutfeeling is worth a damn then these things totally belong to the HighQuality department in general.

are there really no good free vst compressors?
