Thanks Mudcat007!Mudcat007 wrote:You can set this up to where it is relatively transparent or with some "character" as well. Plenty of tweakability available.AC222 wrote:Hmmm interesting.... You know I've tried pretty much all the free ones that get frequently mentioned but not that one. How would you describe it? Character comp or transparent? Fast/Slow attack by default?Mudcat007 wrote:All of the above plus RedPhatt Pro from Jeroen Breebaart. This was a payware compressor until fairly recently. Jeroen made it available free of charge after he got his ToneBoosters brand established.
Edit: whoops just thought about the name - the phatt implies character and prolly slower attack
It's surprising how good Ferox and Reelbus are for what they charge. They seem to hold their own in usefulness with alternatives that cost ten times as much. Maybe I should really check out all of the Tonebooster stuff. Any other TB stuff recommended?
Also look at SmashPro which was also mentioned above.
are there really no good free vst compressors?

I LOVE the RedPhatt Pro...but it seems not to be available anymore on the Tonebooster's site...
It's so sad that he hasn't developed the RedPhatt further, it could have been the best dynamic processor ever...

Thanks, now I've found them again! I think I've confounded his personal website with the Tonebooster's site...but I remember that I've downloaded them from the personal website last year...

Another great one - already mentioned - is the ReaComp (and the ReaXComp which is a multiband compressor). Clear as glass, and they're free now (I still don't understand why Cockos made all these great plugins free!)

some you can barely hear it's doing something at all. :O now i do realize that might be because it's 'transparent'..

You might try this one for hearable results (first one):
http://www.xferrecords.com/freeware/
It's hard to know what you are after, really, but you probably won't want anything that calls itself "opto", like an LA-2A style, since those will be subtle.
Also try the "loud & punchy" preset on here:

And this one's pretty self-explanatory:

I think I must share your low standards. TBH I could survive with just the ones that come with Live.Arglebargle wrote:I must have really low standards, I find nearly any software compressor to be good.

I'm surprised more people don't know about Antress' Seventh Sign, which is probably the best free comp... just ever honestly. And I've used extensively every free one mentioned here.
Antress Seventh Sign. Just, like the f**king best free comp ever.

Trollin, trollin, trollin on a riva....................
The Molot is x64, yes?
That outta get the "DUH" of the year award. No but seriously, it's hard to go wrong with a very flexible comp where the dev is not afraid of the real world (unlike synthedit boogers.......yep, I just said that!)
