ipad new (current model) versus ipad 2 or 3 - problems recording?

I was all set to buy a brand new ipad 4 (128gb) ro replace my 32gb ipad2 when I read about a lightning port or something like that - and not the traditional ipad data port.
Is the new ipad missing this data port? If so, are there problems recording audio with the new ipad? Is there anything I should be concerned about using all the existing apps I bought - and I bought a LOT of apps?
Am I better of with a 64gb v3 edition ipad? Is the camera optics better on the v3 or is the v4 the best? Is the processor light years better on the 4 or just a bit better than the 3?
Thanks for everyone's help.
Mike

The 4 is better than the three in a few ways. It uses a newer processor which is about twice as fast as the 3. The front facing camera is a higher resolution (0.3MP vs 1.2MP). It has MIMO which will allow for two channel bands through a MIMO equipped router. Think of two water faucets instead of one. Though it isn't theoretically twice as fast, it can get more data than a single band device. I think the 4 also has some improvement for LTE in Europe. It may also be slightly bigger and a bit heavier than the 3 as I think it has a bigger battery, but I can't remember for sure.
Apple's devices are moving to the new lightning connector. They have a lightning to 30-pin adapter you can buy to work with older 30-pin hardware devices. I bought the lightning to USB camera connection kit and works great with all my MIDI devices using the iConnecMIDI. I don't yet have any USB recording device, but the 4 will work with recording equipment as well. The big question is whether or not you already have a recording device. If it is USB, there is a good chance it will continue to work. If it is the 30-pin, it is likely it will continue to work, but you should really research and double check. There may be some devices that don't play well with the lightning to 30-pin adapter. Also, any 30-pin device with a form factor to fit the iPad will be a problem as you may need to hang the 4 outside of the device to connect the two.

Apple changed the connection shape on the newest pad - just buy the (30$!!) adapter when you pick up the pad. If you have a dock type interface you're outta luck, but the new connection is fine when used with the adapter, albeit pretty unwieldy (it makes the pad look like a tennis racket in Minecraft!). I use an Audiobox 22vsl interface - it works quite well, and the new ipad easily runs 4 - 5 apps at once for lots of synced up musical goodness. Games and text look great on the retina display too, noticeably better than the android devices owned by friends of mine (who concluded that a 4:3 ratio screen makes way more sense for everything other than widescreen movies).
Ignore the camera on all i-things: they simply suck. Get a real camera, even the cheapest available will smoke a pocket computer or telephone. And it looks rather silly taking photos with an ipad. A pad will make a good companion for your camera with the camera connection kit - you can review your shots on it's screen in the field. Ipad will even display RAW files, although they eat a ton of space. I wouldn't count on the pads color balance either - theres no way to adjust or correct it, it is what Apple decreed.
All your apps will work fine, better in fact when used in tandem.

I just bought a dock for my ipad 2 (usb, hdmi, etc) and was going to use it if I buy the new ipad 4. Now I know I cannot (damnit). It was expensive too.
I guess my wife gets the dock (and my ipad 2) when I buy the new ipad 4.
Grumble Grumble.

By dock, you mean one of the devices where you set your iPad inside of it? You can probably still use the dock, you just won't be able to have the iPad fit snug in the dock. You will have to lie out the lightning to 30-pin cable, which I realize is probably not what you want. But you may be able to use it this way for awhile until you really feel the need to get something else.
I am crazy about my 4. It is just fantastic for doing music (and games). It is so quick at swapping between apps. I might be creating a MIDI touch template in one app to trigger sounds in another and I quickly switch apps fairly seamlessly. I am able to get several apps running in the background without any hiccups. It has taken what I did with the iPad 1 to a whole new level where I can now accomplish things I just could not do before. But realize, I went from the 1st Gen to the 4th. The jump was fairly significant for me. I am pretty sure the 3 can handle similar situations just fine, too.
If you are a gamer, there are some benefits with the 4, as well. Some developers include increased visual features on the 4 that they don't provide in the 3. The 4 can still handle a decent framerate where the 3 would stutter, so they limit some features for the 3. I can't remember the games and example screenshots showing the differences. One of them may have been a Batman game and another may be "N.O.V.A. 3". And games like "Galaxy on Fire 2 HD", the 4 can handle a higher resolution and remain smooth while the 3 needs to use a lower resolution.
