+1 Got to agree with that

It's mutual trust, the dev give free limits, and the users should pay such freedom back by observing the rules set without need for policing.

That it is why I like to use paid for DAW I guess, the limits are more clear ;)

Technically it's not free, but the demo is unlimited and never expires, except that after a while a screen starts coming up at startup asking if you want to buy the program. The screen goes away after a few seconds and you otherwise have a fully functional DAW.
Why not simply paying the $60 and having the full licensed version (if you do not exceed the business volume)? $60 - it doesn't get any cheaper than REAPER -- compared to other DAWs that cost more than $200...

Get Reaper for $60 if:
You are an individual or business, using REAPER for commercial use, and the yearly gross revenue does not exceed USD $20,000.
And that's completely logical because if you for instance make a hit record with Reaper and make lots of dosh, naturally you are in a position to pay the full license fee then ;)

...or to change to Pro Tools if you'd earn THAT much...

But what I don't understand: There are people who buy plugins for more than $100 each, and they cannot pay the $60 license fee for a whole DAW??

BTW what happened with the free LMMS Studio?? Is it still recommendable?

I used it a bit in the past, it is a good solution for those who like the FL Studio layout.

But I had problems using it on my computer as it froze up all the time when I used VST's. And it hasn't been updated since then (february last year), so I'm giving it at rest until a new version appears.

Psycle is no doubt my no 1 free DAW solution.

But then you need to like tracker style sequencing ;)

I've never understood how to insert notes in Psycle (converted in which numbers) -- and I haven't found a manual about it, so I gave up, many years ago...

Trying to circumvent licenses is frowned upon. Since Reaper's license is so generous and the product so inexpensive for non-commercial users, it's even more frownworthy to evade its agreement. (No, I don't use Reaper and likely never will. That matters not. C'est la loi.)
but i could have sworn that years ago justin made a statement that reaper could be used free, in 'nag mode' for those under an extremely low income level. did that change, or was this this just rumors with no basis? i already own reaper, but i read this somewhere? contractual IS contractual though. agreed.

I can't really recommend it. IMO it's too buggy, the included instruments suck big time, and it lacks a lot of features other DAW's offer. Plus the VST/i's compatibility is not up to par with other hosts. Did i mention it doesn't support ASIO? :P Meaning the latency with PortAudio will be huge.

When I started with Reaper it was in the 0.x version Beta phase.

When v1.0 came around and it became a commercial product, I used the 30-day (no 60) demo (uncracked!) even after the 30 days were over. Nag screen here, nag screen there, didn't bother my ass ... until I got bored and switched back to the v0.9 Beta which was still free and nagless (still available).

After being such a bad, bad boy, I bought a version 2.x/3.x license when that was fresh, the consecutive necessary 4.x/5.x license in 2011 (IIRC) and once a Reaper v6 comes out I'm very likely to buy that as well.
For Reasons probably only evident to other Reaper power-users like myself.

So what started out as a no-no has become the love of a lifetime, I'm a repeatedly paying customer they've got in their boat for sure.
Goes to show ... using Reaper past its demo period doesn't really have to hurt anyone.

But it's still NOT a free product, and once it becomes a vital part of your productions, I think you should return the favour and do the fair and right thing and pay for it.

Back to topic:

I also would have hinted towards Zynewave Podium free, because that reminded me of Reaper a lot when I tried it 2 or so years ago. But since then it's evolved quite a bit, so it's not really comparable anymore. Still worth having a go!
Reaper user? Get my free JSFX plug-ins, also available via ReaPack extension.

You mean for some poor guys in the deep jungle that cannot afford to pay $60? If someone can purchase plugins, he/she should be able to pay $60, too IMHE (in my honest experience)...

The OP can also try the free version of Samplitude 11:

http://pro.magix.com/en/samplitude/midi ... h.730.html

Limited to 8 tracks, and I believe there may be a limit as to the number of VSTs per track.

thats actually what i mean, all jokes aside. people from other countries. of course, you have to ask, if they cant afford 60 usd, then they cant afford a pc. or, kids, who don't work, or are too young to work. in terms of, the us, 60 usd is very affordable. even i, on a fixed income, can afford 60 dollars.
