USB interface: Steinberg UR22 x Audiobox 22VSL

Hi,

I'm trying to decide between Steinberg UR22 or Presonus 22VSL.

One of my concerns is about latency, cause I'll record guitar using Amplitube guitar amp modeling, so I need to monitore the processed signal, not the direct monitoring. Which one is best for this?

Also, if you have any others opinions about mic pre quality, etc, I'll appreciate.

My notebook is a Core i5 3210M 2.5GHz, 6GB RAM, Win 7 64bits.

I have the UR22; it's got low latency, and the pre's sound good. However, even with the "instrument" switch engaged, it overloads the interface even at the lowest settings on the knob. This happens with humbucker guitars, but even with my Strat to an extent. The 44VSL I had was a lot better in this context, so you might want to go with the 22VSL for that.

I liked my 44VSL a lot too, I just went with the UR22 because I wanted to try something different, and wanted something bus-powered.

I mentioned only recording guitar with plug-in due to my concern with latency with DAW monitoring. But I'll use the interface to record acoustic guitar with condenser mics too.

Using a DI box with the guitar maybe solve the overload noise?

About the UR22 and 22VSL/44VSL mic pres and converters, do you think there's a big difference, which one do you think is better?

I think the UR22 is better overall, in terms of latency and quality of preamps. I've recorded acoustic guitars with a condenser, and I'm quite impressed with this, especially given its low lost.

As for DI guitars, yes, I'm just running a shitty Behringer DI into the XLR, and it solves the problem for me with guitar rig, so I am going to now buy a Countryman for this purpose. I do still use GR5 frequently for songwriting.

I still in doubt, and almost giving up in buy the UR22.

polaris20, have you tested your UR22 with condenser mics? No noise?

There are some complains at web foruns about a noise - similar to a pulsating low hum - when using a condenser mic with Phantom Power activated.

Some customers did several tests, with dozen of condenser mics, XLR cables, USB cables, but seems to be really a defect of the unit. Something goes wrong when Phantom Power is activated. They even uploaded audio samples to shows the issue, link below.

The UR22 is the best for me. I haven't heard the others but this interface is all you need. I can tell you this.
