Collection of 4 synths inspired by SY77, M1, VFX, D50, that runs in the UVI Engine. Costs $199 to buy

Summary:
Size: 24 GB library
Content: 501 presets, 18,988 samples
Sample resolution: 44.1 kHz. Recording at 96 kHz.
Don't forget iLok needed.

Unfortunately can't see any sign of a demo version....

So what exactly is the engine? It's just their own sampler with crafted interfaces?

You can download it for free at their website and check it out. Comes with a bunch of starter sounds, I think. Machfive is also built on their engine.

It's a bit sad that there doesn't appear to be a demo to try out the synths

When it comes to the likes of SY77 and M1, straight samples will bring out everything that people didn't like with late 80's synths (thin, brittle, metallic, etc). What their power lies in is the possibility to shape the sounds, for instance the vector synthesis of the SY77.

Without having the possibility to check how UVI have managed to transform that into the plugin world, it is difficult to make a purchase.

The Sy77 can do very full, 'fat' and warm sounds too.

No vector synthesis in SY77, I'm afraid. Perhaps you meant Yamaha SY22?

Yeah, maybe I confuse the SY22 with the SY77, but the synthark site say it features vector synthesis?:

The SynthArk is the only site which mentions the SY77 as having Vector synthesis. Certainly, the manual of my SY77 does not mention it.

The "50 points" is also strange. SY77's amp envelopes go up to 4 points. It's certainly possible to set the envelopes to mix 4 sources, but I'm not sure if that's what vector synthesis is about.

Never saw that on my TG77 as well. ( Expander of the SY for those who care )The TG33 had a joystick iirc and it could do Vector Synthesis by recording the movement of the joystick, then playing it back ( So it was associated with a particular physical controler )

But TG77 ....

UVI has been busy lately! Lots of new retro-synth/sampler sample libraries in the last year.

To those asking, bear in mind these are sample-based libraries akin to buying a "sampled synth" library for Kontakt. These are not softsynth emulations of the originals. The best you'l do with UVI is tweak the core library of sounds. My understanding is there is no ability to 'program from scratch' here -- these are sample libraries of preset sounds.

So, that being accepted, I think it's cool that UVI have been focusing on sampling synths that, with a couple exceptions:

1. have no softsynth counterpart (exception: korg m1)

2. native instruments / 3rd part kontakt have not covered at all, or not well.

NI released the totally lackluster "retro machines vol. 2" library, and then forgot about the entire notion of creating sample libraries of old synths+samplers. Which I find surprising, really, not that I understand the market well. But I certainly am drawn to UVI's coverage of:

1. Emulator I and II
2. Fairlight CMI
3. Yamaha SY77
4. Roland D50
5. Ensoniq VFX
6. Roland JX-3P

not to mention all the older, rarer synths they cover as well....

BUT, their price point is way too high. And I can't help but constantly wish these were all kontakt libraries, because I know the program well, and it sucks to have to keep buying / loading yet more, differnet players (and ones that come nowhere near the power and flexibility of kontakt).

Despite all this attention I'm paying to them, I haven't bought a single thing from UVI... yet. Mostly because of the price, and my lack of interest in using another player interface. But sampling an SY-77 and VFX has definitely got my interest piqued. If anybody buys this, please chime in with your thoughts on the quality of the content.
