How exactly do I apply sidechain compression in FL Studio? I want to do it with a kick drum and bass. I have TC Native compressor and Sonalksis compressor to choose from...

Post

not sure about the sonalksis, but with TC you can use the sidechainer plugin (included with the TC compresor/de-esser) on the kickdrum track, and the compressor/de-esser on the bass track. Select to monitor the key input corresponding to the kick track in the compressor plugin and then you're good to go.

Rusty, I've done everything you said and it doesn't work...Key input window in the compressor window doesn't work...

Post

I've tried it in Cubase SX too and same thing...key input function is unavailable...

Post

weird... works fine for me... maybe try making sure you have the most current version and reinstalling?

If you have the waves plugin you can do sidechaining via the C1 compressor too

You can do this with fruity's internal plugin Peak Controler.

First put it on the track that you want to have as a side chain.

Then choose any knob (eg. the level of a channel to be compressed), right click, select "link to controller...". You should see Peak ctrl - Peak within "Internal conrollers", choose it and.. have fun.

Ah well, it seems you don't need it now, but anyway...Procomp (one of the old ones by db)is a very easy to setup sidechainer and low on CPU. You just set up 2 instances as inserts. One on kick (which you set to send) and one on bass (which you set to receive) and off you go. You can also send out to multiple instances if I remember correctly. Cheap as chips too. I think they still sell it?

As a matter of totally irrelevant interest...sometimes it works better to use a frequency dependent comp rather than a sidechain - alot depends on the music material though. Just find the frequency band you which you want to stand out most in the kick, then set a comp over the bassline to compress this same band a little without any gain boost, so that it reduces that frequencies output. Depending on the material it can help the kick power the track without obvious dynamics problems of ducking. And it means you only use one instance of an insert instead of 2 (saving CPU).
Thought you might like to know that.
But you might not also.
I'll go now...........

But rememember that you can only work in mono when using Waves C1 for sidechaining.

I don't know FL Studio that well, so I'm not sure if it's possible to make the required signal routings for this to work. Our own product Compadre beatpuncher, and a range of other sidechain products from Kjaerhus, Voxengo & Chunkware all use a similar approach. So if it's somehow possible to do the required routings in FL Studio I would also very much like to hear how.

Otherwise I guess a good solution would be to fire up a modular plugin capabale of hosting VST plugins, for example EnergyXT.

justified explained it above - all you need is some understandig about how the peak controller works in FL. Search the FL forum - this subject is covered (with detailed examples) over there.

Yes, I think that trick is pretty well known amongst people now, but the interest here was whether it would be possible to do the flexible routings required to perform proper sidechaining using a sidechain enabled compressor.

The peak controller "trick" will indeed work and give you decent results, but it is basicly just like automating or riding the volume slider, and this will not give you as musical a sound as if the audio was run through an actual compressor. When building a good sounding compressor a great deal of effort is put into finetuning the way the processing reacts to the envelope of the audio signal. It's not as simple as automating the volume.

FL PeakController does seem to offer some tweaking of the process, but for many people I guess it would still be interesting to find a way to use their favorite character-compressor for the sidechaining duties.

Best regards,
Rune

:uhuhuh: If you're implying what I think you are.

Anyways, I think if someone knows how to do this, they should spill the beans here. A lot of people (including myself) find this to be such a mystery, FL is such a vast program with so many options that there are many things still hidden from most people.
