Not having midi out restricts you from sending your programmed patterns/sequences to other midi devices, like an MPC or a DAW.

OK, thanks - now I understand midi, so I would be able to create sequences within my DAW and that will send that midi to the unit, then upon recordings you could tweak cut/off and res on the unit...

I wonder how the drum machine(volca beats) one would be mapped to a midi keyboard then?

it was mentioned in a video and i think all i think he said was that it wasn't mapped after GM

Probably just C2 and then each key up for the number of drums.

Not to derail the thread, but I would love to see them at least double the polyphony on the Keys one and come out with a Mini Polysix or something. The Volca Keys has three notes, so at least six would be nice. I wouldn't even mind if it had the mini keys (like a Microkorg or a MiniNova). But I think if they had a nice true analog poly synth it would sell as well.

Well, i hope it is!
If they make profit on these, think what a unit could be like!

Ever since this musikmesse i've been thinking of going hardware non-stop. Will for instance two knobs for a bassdrum with no individual out boost creativity or will i feel it's not enough after a while? MFB got some interesting alternatives but with individual outs you start to get the need for a mixer and suddenly things take space so you can't really be in the sofa anymore.. and you'll want some compressors and effect units ... then what.. multiband units for mastering? Leaving the world of the DAW? Maybe a new soundcard with multiple inputs would be the salvation. Focusrite and Motu got some nice ones i saw good deals on.
There's not one unit i haven't gone through the last few days

Before this messe i looked hard at the Elektron stuff. There you have lots of effects inside the boxes along audio inputs so you don't really need a mixer.

I think pulling from the best of both worlds is the way to go. There are a lot of fantastic software things out there and I also like mixing ITB with all the choices that it affords. There are some things that the computer is just better at. On the other hand, I still have a lot of my hardware, including instruments, sequencers, outboard efx and analog mixers, etc. and it's really really nice to be able to have hands on interaction with your music creating. (Instead of all that mousing around!)

From that direct recording it seems the delay is universal on the Beats and you can't apply it to separate sounds. Shame. Although there will probably be hacks in the future for individual outs.

The Monotron and Monotribe have lots of hacks, they even labelled the points on the PC board.

The Volcas have only one output (stereo? I can't find info on it). So does the Volca Beats have at least something like a simple mixer to pan the separate drum sounds? To me, this would make the difference between a simple toy and something that's at least useful for practical purposes.

From what i understand, no panning, stereo output. Not sure if the sounds are panned by default.
