I've been doing this virtual modular searching for the last six months and have come to the following conclusions:

Vaz Modular is the most like a classic modular (Win only though)
Reaktor is the most flexible - particularly with the Modular X macros.
Tassman has some of the nicest sounds (but is actually more difficult to use than Reaktor)
Karma FX is the easiest to use (I use it for classroom demos all the time)
Modular V is a relatively cheap emulation but the GUI sucks and Reaktor (with Modular X) can do the same thing better
Bazille seems like a future winner for easy to use.

The rest are either not really on the radar, no longer supported or not really complete.

Have to say now that i've played with a Nord Modular i'm totally sold on the hybrid soft/hardware approach.
Looking forward to the new Usine.

...thats actually 90% of it. Not too many cabling synths around. The complete modular IMO is VOID from PSoft. Cabling with vst support - it is that ultimate synth.

Why aren't there more reviews on this one? It looks pretty sweet. Gonna try the demo. I've been using Sonigen Modular Beta and love modulars like this. Thanks for the tip.

Virsyn Tera, if it ever goes 64 bit. U-He Zebra can be thought of as a semi-modular, and I'm also eagerly awaiting Bazille.

I'll second the love for Xils 3 as well. Lots of fun to be had with that one.

Theres nothing to stop you creating a modular synth from various VSTs and wiring them together in a modular host.

As an example Melda have a high quality Oscillator, run that through The Drop inside Mux and you can create youre own shit.

Fruityloops is one of the older hosts that allow you to do modular routing with various deep native modulation plugins you can eaily hook up to any parameter.

Why wait for someone else to create your dream synth?
Its been possible to mix and match modules in the hardware world from various devs for a long while, its just taking a while for users to realise you can do the same in software, probably due to a limited mindset and philosophy IMO.

It is not the same... Analog modulars allow audio rate modulations and interesting feedback loops.

Reason can be used as a modular synth, and hasn't been mentioned so far.
Audulus is another, but mac only.

Well Aturia always gets bashed, but the Modular V (formerly Moog Modular) is very fun to use and has the cables, modules and routing emulated pretty well. Its sound may be surpassed by others but I still love using it.

i couldn't get the demo to work.. tried 3 or 4 times. and the developers is MIA i think. there's another thread about it and how he's tied up w/other things and has no time for it.. or something like that.. it's a shame though. nice sounding synth from the demos.. though i think it's too spendy.
