Whats up everybody! I've been messing around making beats for like 6 months now, figuring stuff out in fl, looking stuff up like mastering and ect. and i really want to get serious about it.

I haven't had much luck with free vst's, they don't sound as (for lack of a better word) professional or crisp as i want them to. I just downloaded piano one and independence free, they should cover piano. I'm looking for good free vst's for every essential hip hop instrument, come to think of it, i don't know that many instruments used in hip hop. I use hi hats, kicks, snare, sometimes claps, and piano on like every song. I've used some pads, horns and some brass on a couple tracks but i don't know what instruments i should even look for! If someone can put me onto some nice free vst, and maybe list out some commonly used instruments in hip hop, it would be awesome! :)

on futureproducers.com many hiphop producers meet. often they name purity a top free vst.
Finally!

A sampler and some drum loops is traditionaly what's used in hip-hop, often with samples of classical music ... check out shortcircuit http://www.vemberaudio.se/shortcircuit.php

and buy some vinyl to sample :)

Hiphop means a lot of different things to people these days...could you be more specific as to the style you do?

I'll second thecontrolcentre - samplers seem to be by far the most prominent instrument in most hiphop. Then look at sample sets specifically aimed at hiphop, once you've exhausted all the freebie samples out there. A decent starting point for samples is www.sf2midi.com - there's enough there to keep you occupied for around 15 years, I'd imagine. Mostly they're Soundfonts - which Shortcircuit and several other samplers have no problem playing. And I'll also second Shortcircut. As a freebie, it's immense value. I once upon a time was thinking shelling out some money on a serious s/w sampler. But once I got into Shortcircuit, I simply didn't need to bother (although I still might buy Alchemy one day - that's got some serious power under the hood). But for everyday sample mangling, Shortcircuit's got everything you need. I grew up on h/w Akai samplers, and really, Shortcircuit blows most of them out of the water. I still have my old S950, and it's nothing but a toy compared to Shortcircuit.

Another way to go would be a dedicated production set like arturia's Hip Hop Producer or Sonixox Playa or Sampla. Check them out here:

This way you're at not reinventing the wheel every time you sit down to compose, and the reviews on this stuff has raves from actual users.

Not free, but by the time you download all the various (legally questionable) samples from all over, import them into your session and see what's actually usable, you could have made a track with one of these!

They have dozens of loops, drum kits, virtual instruments, effects and synths to work with, and are really reasonably priced for all you get with them.

Good Luck!

I don't really use that kind of stuff but Native Instruments has a great selection of synthesizers. Kontakt is one with real instruments, MASSIVE is one with more synthesized sound (not real instruments). They're expensive but if you get NI Maschine, you get Komplete Elements free with it, which comes with Guitar Rig, MASSIVE, Kontakt and not only that but 11GB of sounds, samples, instruments, FX, plugins and stuff like that. I just got it a week ago, I LOVE IT!

You wanna make phat beatz???? Getchyo self derbtubbo. Make you bank mad in minutezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Don't go bashing freeware. It's the man behind the computer not the computer in front of the man that makes good sounds. All my work has been done on an extremely limited budget, and for software, my budget has been spent on the effects. Not one of my synths is commercialware (except Microtonic which is a drum machine. Aside from that, Scanned Synth is the only synth I paid money for but it is donationware.

Seriously consider Synth1 - it's freeware, yes, but has truly some incredible versatility behind it. Yes, I am no one, so maybe me saying all my music's instruments are free holds no credibility behind how truly powerful freeware can be, but I can promise you there are commercial successes out there who use Synth1.

Geist(or Poise)
Kontakt 5(and any libraries you may need, N.I. do many to fill your needs here)
A Minimoog type synth, like Monark
1 more polyphonic VA or Hybrid, maybe Alchemy, Tal Uno LX, Lush-101, Diva, Oxium etc(Demo them first for CPU and to see if the suit your needs) or try freeware if on a budget.
Classic Drum machine samples(808, 909, DMX etc)/Breakbeat Style Drum samples.
Maybe a good FM synth too...like FM8 etc.

Hip Hop sounds usually have influences from Jazz Funk instruments like Clavinet, Rhodes, Brass Sections, Slap Bass etc through to Synth Based Electronic sounds(Digital(CZ-101/DX7) or Analog/VA) and sampling. Depending on your style, Modern, Golden Era or Old School.
