After an asinine ordeal with people stealing my stuff, I am about ready to buy a new cpu. But, I have noticed that almost anything you can get now, as far as PC goes, comes with Windows 8. I was just wondering if there was any inside info in regards to this new OS and how it relates to music production. Essentially, I just want to know if there is any reason not to go ahead and pick up a new machine and expect everything to install properly and more importantly, function properly. Thank You for any help you can offer. :help:

I dont have Windows 8 yet , maybe never . But if you get a new PC you will most likely want the " start menu back " and a way to bypass the tiled " metro " interface so it'll be more like XP or Windows7 , here are some hacks to do so http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-33642_7-57 ... windows-8/ . Windows 8 is basically just like Windows 7 after doing the hacks . There also is another issue with the " legacy firewire driver " there is also a way to get that downloaded and working too . http://www.eightforums.com/drivers-hard ... -motu.html . Im skipping Windows 8 by the way , It will be interesting to see if they do some spring cleaning and fixing with the upcoming 8.1 release or Windows Blue ?

Im using Win8.
No probs or issues.

Installed it on a 7 year old Core2 Duo Thinkpad (recently bought reconditioned), found all the hardware and runs great, better than the preinstalled Vista. Uses way less resources. I installed Win8 as Vista was just shite, couldnt get ris of crackles and used a silly amount of RAM.

Living without a Start menu, addons to mimic it just use system resources.
All my software runs fine, my old RME cardbus Multiface runs fine.

Boots in about 20 seconds.
Any drivers for Vista and Win7 should work Ok.

For me its the best Win OS yet, Im seriously well chuffed!

Thank You both for all of the info. I am feeling re-assured now. Much better than when Windows went to Vista. I ended up paying $1200 just for a core 2 duo laptop with XP on it. Not good times! Thank You again.

I recently built a PC for my wife using a new UEFI BIOS motherboard. It boots in 7 seconds. That's from the time you push the button. Make sure you get a motherboard with the new UEFI BIOS, and try to get an SSD drive for the OS.

Rumors are that Windows 8.1 (Blue) will supposedly be bringing back the ability to choose to boot straight to desktop without dealing with the touchscreen interface. It will be interesting to see what happens.

I'm more than halfway thru installing everything on new WindowWindows 8 DAW especially happy as I've managed to install my old Presonus firepod interface which is officially unsupported on W8 by Presonus!Plus JBridge has got my old Virtual Guitarist working too!

You can use the Classic Start program to go straight to desktop and give the standard start menu options. In general I have found Windows 8 to be faster than my Windows 7 installation, seems to work with my USB interface with less crackles when pushed (only my own experience with my configuration).

One things I have found is E-mu Emulator X3 seems to work much better on my Windows 8 installation than it ever did on my Windows 7.

Windows 8 is great. Faster, and just like windows 7 once you install start8 and modernfx from star dock.

I like it a lot. No issues with audio or video. In fact win8 is faster than any other windows I've used.

64 bit win8 on i7 quad with 32gb ram and 256GB SSD

Love it.

works well for me but I prefer windows 7 after using it for 4 months.

Running Ableton Live 9 64bit, ilok,, jbridge , loads of third party plugins on Windows 8 pro 64bit

No problems.

Sounds like a winner! Actually Kaboom, you just about described my previous setup exactly. Although, I haven't gone to 9 yet with Ableton. I appreciate all the re-assurance. I'm actually starting to get a little excited about gettin some new sh#t. Would like to have my old sh#t back more though.... :x
