FMDrive is out. I've purchased it today and am awaiting delivery, but from what I've seen on the youtube demos this is gonna be a weapon. Not only is it emulating the sound and functionality of a customizable Megadrive console, it also includes the lesser known holdovers from the Atari PSG, for example the hardwave envelopes that let you make grinding vocaloid/syncoid tones in combination with the FM engine.

Really really can't wait to start delving into this :)

Whoever wants music instead of noise, joy instead of pleasure, soul instead of gold, creative work instead of business, passion instead of foolery, finds no home in this trivial world of ours.

I bought it a few days ago and already recieved my version.

I need to read the manual.

FM8 more than covers all my FM needs, but I'l gladly toss a few coins over in support of this product. I am curious about the DAC emulation though. Does it import and mangle samples in the same manner as you typically heard on the chip? PCM playback quality varied wildly from more or less clean to awful depending on how the sound driver was coded. I've actually tried to simulate it myself with a square amplitude LFO to mimic the timing issues.

Get this one as soon as possible, before sega put his lawyers behind this guy.

Anyone who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.

I think would be more clever do not use the SEGA logo. Nor the Yamaha name.

reFX do not put the commodore logo on his quadraSID :hihi:

The emulation itself is no problem.

BTW, I made my donation. :hihi:

Is this a .dll file? If so I'm going to use the VFX software on a Mac to use it.

been on the lookout for these types of FM chip emulation for years but I don't think i could bear to look at that GUI for more than half a minute.

So, how is it?

Yeah, it's not the best GUI in the world but pleepidy ploop.

Regarding the mining of sounds and other information from "obsolete" commercial ROMs, it is somewhat of a grey area legally, like sampling. As far as I understand it, FM patch rips from games have been around a lot longer than this particular emulator, and to be honest I can't see someone getting sued for using "The bass sound from Act II of Angel Island Zone" unless their tune goes multi platinum (i.e. more than 100 downloads). The ethical question is something else entirely but as I only look at other people's sounds to study and learn from them (and goof around and get nostalgia) and not to use in my music, it doesn't bother me.

The sad (or beautiful) fact of life, though, is that you can't create something entirely from scratch. Often the difference between a mediocre and a transcendental sound is in the tiny details. I've studied the sound programming work of Rob Hubbard extensively and taken many lessons from that. You could argue that by doing this I've cheated him of the chance to sell me tutelage. Hell, maybe I should be charging for bits of advice others have told me were useful that I gave out without even thinking about money because, hell, I want to see more creativity in the world :)

As far as the plugin is concerned, it hasn't been delivered yet. Hence this post :)

I watched the demo of this to listen to the sounds and I was thinking the same thing.

Indeed, better not to use any trademarked names or logo's without prior consent form the respective right holder.

(FWIW, IAAL.)
