Hey,

I'd like to set up a delay with a quickly changing random length without getting messed-up transients. Is this possible? And why does this happen?

I can upload an audio file if you want, but maybe it's a common problem that you know about.

I've used ReaDelay with Reaper's Random-LFO, but I've also tried Waves' SuperTap with the same Results.

On an analog bucket brigade delay, the number of buckets (samples) is fixed. So if you change delay time, the content already in the delay line gets pitch-shifted. That's not what you want, and also not what commonly happens in digital delays. There the size of the delay buffer is changed. It takes a clever algorithm to handle that smoothly. If the time is set larger, an empty piece is inserted, which is somewhere in the middle of something already present. If the time is set shorter, a random piece of audio is discarded. I think that's what you describe with transient mess-ups.

Maybe you can use several delay instances with different times, and switch to which delay you send it.
