Hey guys. So I'm thinking of trying to incorporate some vocals in my music but I really don't know where to start. I can't sing at all nor do I really know how to begin writing lyrics.
When you first decided it was time to use some vocals how did you go about it?
Hire someone to sing?
-Thanks

Regarding lyric writing, instead of writing 5 pages of posts, I recommend you to read "Shortcuts to HIT Songwriting" by Robin Frederick (Taxi Publishing). There are great tips, especially for lyric writing.
If you can't sing, there are 2 alternatives: Learn to sing, or let someone other sing (but not me

It depends what you mean by not being able to sing. If you lack confidence you need to practice more, or if you don't pitch well you could take lessons, etc. The voice is the same as any other instrument - you can learn how to 'play' it better.
As for writing lyrics, I my personal opinion is that it's either something you have in you or you don't. That doesn't stop some people from writing the most godawful lyrics and still having a hit with them though... But if you want to try, you could always just experiment and then get some opinions on the result.

This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

i always thought music was about what you were saying, not a pastime with a wide array of commercial expansion options :p

This pretty much sums it up. You gotta be able to put yourself out on a limb and express, with practice this will get better. The trick is to practice.robojam wrote:It depends what you mean by not being able to sing. Where it comes to lyrics I always start out phonetically.
I sing 'sounds' or words that fit in with the mood of the song then they evolve to a lyric.

Hello bro i have some ood advice for you in part i believe!
I can't sing well. But now that ive been watching Aussie vocal coach Ian Castle on youtube a little iv'e learned alot.
Ive written about 15 songs for my album that i haven't started working on yet. I wrote them, most of them, in minutes. I attribute that , to yes, the Holy Spirit in whom I had communication and connection with big time during all of my song writing. I write Christian music... It brought me to, "that place".
I havent hardly began reading it but "writing better lyrics by PAt Pattison inspired me on something that I had already done. She inspired me through a very easy but intricate explanation on how to get to "that place". That place has something to do with feelings, memories, and thoughts. To me music is expression. Find a way that you operate well, to express yourself.
Good luck if there is such a thing and look to the great Advocate, Jesus. Never give up on hope, as it is written. God bless. -Anthony

As far as lyrics go, Sometimes if I don't have anything exciting going on in my life I'll write from the perspective of a movie character or something... but I don't let on that's what I'm doing, you just got to do whatever it takes to get words in the song sometimes. This was inspired by The Crow:

+1 to this. Inspiration can be found anywhere. Try taking a story from the news headlines and writing a song about that topic. As far as actual lyric writing goes that is another skill that you will have to practice. Your first attempts probably won't be very good but you'll get better over time. I was taking guitar lessons for 3 years already by the time I started singing, I wrote my 1st song and just wrote lyrics and vocal melody, got a band, started playing.
