I don't know how or why the UColo thing got shut down. It's pretty much impossible to shut down a usenet list. Maybe traffic just died off once we started hosting it on our own servers?
It wasn't a USENET forum. It was a subscriber-based email list. My initial recollection was a bit foggy, I had thought it was USENET so I went back and checked. It was email.
That is totally untrue. The only time we deleted messages was when people posted warez, cracks, or patently offensive material. After the year of the worst releases we ever did (Pro Audio 7.0 & 8.0), the newsgroup was an absolute abyss of customer discontentment. Not a word was censored, and it wasn't shiny happy times.
Well let's just agree to disagree about the censorship. We're certainly not going to settle any differences here. But "absolute abyss of customer discontentment" is exactly what the feeling at the time was among us users. At least we agree on that.
Even now we have a very light hand in moderating our web forum. Maybe it's still too much of a Cakewalk love-fest for your taste. But there's no conspiracy behind that, just a bunch of happy users.
I'm wary of anything that smells of Parfume de Fanboi.

As I mentioned previously, I, along with a lot of others, were very disillusioned with TwelveTone back in '94. Seeing the post from "Cakewalk Marketing" just dredged up a lot of bad memories.

Cakewalk was a great little DOS app back in the day, and from what I have seen, its evolution to Sonar appears to have been a successful one overall. A company as good as it is with product should be just as good with its customers - apparently Cakewalk learned that lesson. That's a good thing for their current and new customers, even if it is a bit late for some of the older ones.

"A bit late" ... that just seems unreasonable to me. Cakewalk has done an excellent job with their forum. It's a great place -- just like kvr. And I haven't noticed any kind of censorship. Don't know where that view is coming from at all. Sonar, moveover, is dramatically improved compared to versions (including Pro Audio) from years past.

Time to forget about a mailing list disagreement from 1994 and move into the present, IMO.

I think it is a bit unfair and unwarranted for people who hardly post on the forum to call it a snake pit. In fact, it is quite insulting to those of us who enjoy the exchange of information that can only be found at KvR. If you call this a snake pit then you are calling us all snakes. I thought the disagreement and friction was handled very well by both sides. The only way to clear up these issues is to talk about them openly. Any successful business person knows that it is important to listen to both the positive and the negative.

Rabid,

While I agree with most of what you said. There are some things that I do not agree with.

I'm not one of those people that feel that I have to post a reply to every post that is written, hence why I don't have an abundance of post.

And on the issue of how "disagreements" are handled, I have been insulted, told that I don't know what I'm talking about (I assure you that when I post an answer that I know what I'm talking about) and similar forms of "abuse".

And while I will listen to both sides of any arguement, I simply refuse to take part in any of the mudslinging that goes on around here sometimes.

And in this case you are correct, the disagreement was handled well by both sides.

And one final thing, maybe being a successful business person means that I don't have time to sit around and stare at K-v-R all day.

But what ever the case, I do stand by my statements I made earlier.

snake pit, 1 a pit filled with snakes 2. (informal) . a backward or ovvercrowded mental institution, prison, or other such facility, especially one where outmoded theories and practices are perpetuated. 3 (Figurative). any frightening or oppressive place or condition: (It's difficult to orient one's way in the snake pit we're living in [Arthur Miller]).

gnu23 quoth (PS - NNTP or Network News Transfer Protocol is the support structure that currently enables USENET to exist. But USENET existed before NNTP was developed. My experience goes back to the "A" and "B" News days of the early 1980's. UUCP [Unix to Unix Communications Protocol] was the transport then, usually over dialup connections. A nice historical summary of USENET can be found here:

Im aware of that, thank you, having been a systems administrator on one of the larger sites on the UK's JANET network , which is where most UK Usenet feeds were originally available. In fact, I actually set up UUCP feeds for a couple of companies.

Anyways, unlike you, who seems somewhat excessively bitter over events which occurred over a decade ago, Im actually happy to see Cakewalk representatives turning up 'outside their own turf'. It demonstrates a willingness to go to the customer that not many companies bother with these days.

And I'm kind of unhappy with the fact that you, as a seeming newcomer to this board, are using it as a springboard for a 10-year-old issue. That isnt what KVR is about, and quite frankly, attitudes like that are, to me, far less welcome than those you're projecting onto the Cakewalk representative. Want to go start your own bulletin board to keep your old vendettas going, instead of spoiling ours with it?

Also, there is no mention of Kinetic on the site and I have no doubt that when it is announced there will be no special offer and it will be a straight $ to £ conversion which is rediculous given the current exchange rate.
Ah, I see what you are getting at. all of the products you mentioned with the eception of Kinetic, are created by companies outside of Cakewalk. We are just distributors of those products, and our distribution agreements with them do not allow us to sell them outside the US.

You can expect to see Kinetic on the Edirol site within a few days.

I just want to drop you a line and say hello, so.....

"Hello"

I'm the friend of Brandon's that met you in NYC at the AES.

It's good to see you out here in the trenches with the "common folk". As someone already mentioned this is the snake pit and as you've already experienced sometimes a little misinformation some how gets turned into "fact".

But anyway, enjoy your time here, have fun and say hello to the rest of the folks at Cakewalk for me (at least the ones that I know).
Of course I remember you. We met at the Manley party You we're the handsome fellow that had women following you around all night asking for your number.

Hi Carl,

this is Holger from Sonicbytes. I'd like to know if Kinetic supports Midi-Plugins, like our ERA Step-Sequencer (which is comparable to Synchron32).

Holger

Hello Holger,

No, Kinetic does not support MIDI plug-in.

Best regards,

Carl

I'm a Sonar 3 PE user. How would I use Kinetic with Sonar 3? I've never used rewire. It sounds complicated like I would have elements in two different places. Any thoughts on how to use these two products together and workflow?

Tim,

Using ReWire to connect an application with SONAR 3 is rather simple. Your tempos and transport controls are linked together. The audio outputs from the ReWire synth, in this case Kinetic get routed through channels in SONAR for mixing. And when you export your mix from SONAR it automatically includes the elements from the ReWire synth.

I could go on, but there's a tech tip on the Cakewalk website about using Project5 or Reason and SONAR together written by Craig Andertonthat covers this topic nicely. Even though the tip is written for SONAR 2.2, it will still apply to your situation in SONAR 3.

robert -

first of all: there was certainly no offense intended in my initial snake pit mentioning (i hoped the smiley would have just stressed that).

so...there was a smiley, there are some posts which shouldn't be taken seriously or (even worse) personally.

whether it is a snake pit or whatever: i definitely do like this place.

the fact that i, overall, "hardly post" over here doesn't necessarily mean that i wouldn't be an avid reader. and you probably would share my semi sarcastic statement when you go thru threads like the "imposcar vs. minimoog v" one.

so - i hope i clarified on this. there's no need for anyone to feel insulted.

peace.

Ok, you grok. Cool. I'm glad to be long gone from the days of Thicknet, vampire taps, token rings, and modems. 8)
Anyways, unlike you, who seems somewhat excessively bitter over events which occurred over a decade ago, Im actually happy to see Cakewalk representatives turning up 'outside their own turf'. It demonstrates a willingness to go to the customer that not many companies bother with these days.
The general consensus of the board is that Cakewalk now isn't the same company vice its customers that it was then. That's very good news. As for "excessively bitter", well, as I said earlier, "You had to be there." I find it's most people's experience that if they are treated badly by a company, it's a long time, if ever, before they'll do business with them again. That's the case for me vice Cakewalk, but I am taking the board consensus of the current environment into consideration. As I said, that's good news. And as I said in a previous post on this thread,
As long as one Cakewalk rep comes in peace, no problem - nor should there be. My initial post was a reaction to an old raw nerve. Mea culpa.
And I'm kind of unhappy with the fact that you, as a seeming newcomer to this board, are using it as a springboard for a 10-year-old issue. I may be a relative newcomer to K-v-R, but I'm not a newcomer to music in general (40+ years), MIDI (since the first commercial MIDI interfaces and MIDI-capable synths), being a customer of music software companies (I used Cakewalk when it was a DOS app), or of having bad customer experiences.

What I am apparently guilty of, though, is having an opinion contrary to yours. If it takes post-count and politically correct postings to earn your approbation, then we're going to stay at loggerheads. I don't kiss anyone's backside, and I'm sure as hell not going to start with yours. Finally, this thread is not the first on K-v-R to have some heat in it - the PACE thread somes immediately to mind - nor will it be the last.
