I agree. I don't mind it for plugins(I have three iLoks, two syncrosoft keys, and a couple of WIBU ones), but for the host, I definitely prefer not to use one. I own and love Pro Tools 10, but I don't use it as often because I do a lot of laptop work these days and don't like having to plug it in just for the host.

I'm speaking of the rather old code/workflow associated with it. the efx are great, it's just not personally good for my workflow.I don't hate it,but I could never use it again.I finally got away from it last year with version 7. I started out on dp1 many moons ago. Needless to say,I have some background with it.

What's the CPU usage for VIs in comparison to, say... Reaper? :P

Also, what are demo limitations?

Post

30 days, full functionality.

I'm really surprised Motu release a demo of DP. Yes old codes but i think the best codes for what it do. But it is hard to leave ultra fast Reaper anymore for me. If i didn't know Reaper's upcoming midi improvements, i could switch to DP8.

Sure, it's not for everybody, and I also used it as a kid when it was just a MIDI sequencer. I also got hooked on Logic after DP 2.7 and didn't really start using it again until DP7. I use Live, and have since v3, only partially interested in Bitwig, since the live performance aspect isn't stressed really so far, and it will have plenty of obvious omissions.

I guess I remember being all Logic warrior and having a go at DP users 7 years ago etc. when I thought Logic was perfect, Logic 7 ruined that for me, and I find it odd that v7 DP was a final straw for you? I thought it was a strong version, took care of a lot of requests I had. Mostly it's weird that people get so caught up in their taste that they throw negative energy at a new version of DAWs they once used etc.

Since Reaper has a never ending demo and DP8 Windows has 30 days you could do that test and report on it.

I know that Reaper performs like ass on a mac, both Logic and DP blow it away performance wise, but Windows Reaper seems to be pretty tight.

Early Observations along with some comments that also are pre-rtfm help requests:

I really like that UI. I mean, really. The only thing I don't like about it is that in some places the text / font is really, really small and my old eyes have trouble but other than that, pretty damn nice. Importing a midi file results in tracks that are colored very nicely, soft colors kind of like PT.

The UI in general is not slow drawing or anything you might expect from a port. It's smooth resizing and responsive. It feels like a native Win app, unlike say... MixBus, whose Win UI feels like a port.

I am - so far anyway, day one caveat - not a fan of how VI's are managed and have not yet learned how to use multi-outs with VI's. I'm looking for anything resembling a plugin or instrument browser.

It seems that the mixer only shows what's selected in the Track screen. It became a bit confusing at first to swing over to the mixer and only see one mixer channel ... but I like the mixer graphic layout a lot.

Detect Beats: Seems to be the case that DP detects transients on all imported audio material. I dumped in 87 tracks stems from a song and it took a really, really, really, really, long time before I could do anything with it, while it did stuff in the background. I'm looking for a way to turn that off.

The general paradigm of the tabs and different screens, Tracks, Sequences, etc, etc, will take a little getting used to.

Midi notes in the one screen: I'm not so far a fan of that visually. I'll have to play with it a bit more.

Drums: This tab is really nice... especially being right there and always available.

I plan to dive into "chunks" today, to see how all that works since I've heard so much about how useful they are.

I plan to make good use of my 30 day demo and try to learn this thing. The crossgrade price is in the range where if I can come to grips with it, I might buy it.

Could you post if it loads VST3 plugins please..?

Couldn't find out from their website.

If you don't have any, U-He's Podolski is a free VST3 instrument.

Cheers

I believe there is one, or something like it. I know there are multiple ways to add instruments, including the ability to load them into a rack that can be shared between projects. I haven't got to testing it myself yet though.

It's in the options somewhere. I saw it in one of their "quick tip" videos on beat detection. Might want to check for that on the website under the "videos" tab on the DP8 screen.

Yeah, it works differently. Most people don't immediately understand the difference between the "Tracks" screen and the "Sequences" screen.

Don't forget that you can get it from JRR Shop for 10% off with the "KVR" discount code, bringing it down to around $355. I confirmed this with them yesterday.

DP is an extremely deep program, and that's talking from a few versions ago when I last used it. If you do video scoring, it's EXCELLENT. It's extremely sample accurate, high resolution timing, loads of supported formats, etc. have made it a favorite for film composers. I believe it was used for the Lord Of The Rings movies and dozens upon dozens of others.

Lots of things in there to explore, such as the Melodyne-like correction, chunks, video, full audio editing, etc. It's a very complete host from what I've seen. I have only watched videos of this latest version so far though, so we'll see. Part of me hopes it disappoints so that I don't want to get it(I do a LOT of video these days). Part of me hopes that this "old friend" that I've used a bunch in the past is every bit as refreshing as MachFive3 is for me.

We'll see.

Wow! About 8 years too late for me...but good news for my former self in another time dimension

DLd the demo out of curiosity if nothing else. I'm sure this will fail my 15 minute test. Ha! But I've always wondered so here goes... :)
