Hehe, not quite, that was the third take, 1st time there was a huge click in it, 2nd time I sung the wrong words, third time it sounded a bit lacklustre, but I'd had enough, kind of fits with the mood of the song anyway, what's a few wobbly bits matter anyway

(A) About the comments on my entry, "Pyramid k.": Yes, it's a "mish-mash." I basically threw any
really "serious" or "perfectionist" intentions out the window and went for whatever seemed fun or
sounded cool at the moment. That way I was able to finish the tune fairly quickly, compared to the many
false / half-starts I'd been making in the weeks previous. It's really more of a spontaneous "jam" than a deliberate composition, though it took a couple of days to finish. Yes, it's sampled guitar at the start, some short snips from loops, and an "exciter" plugin used on some of the feedback. I'm glad someone likes the weird vocal. I'll have to see if I can use it again somewhere.

How would I classify it? I don't know. To be honest, I'm rather amazed to see how much music these
days (judging from web sites) is categorized and classified. Are there really eight or nine distinct styles of "Techno," another dozen distinct styles of Hip Hop? Seems a bit crazy.

Anyway -- I'm glad at least one person said they thought it was well-mixed / produced, since I've just
started learning this stuff, and I think that's just as important as content. Thanks to all who have been
giving reviews of the entries.


(B) Some short "reviews:"

I'm starting here with a few of my "faves" from this month's entries. All of these have at least a good,
clear sound (clear enough that it doesn't feel like anything is being too "drowned" out). I really should read over previous reviews first, but . . . .


Eric Bourne, "Sunk"
----------------------------
This is really well-composed! Good tune and good use of instruments, with nice little touches / twists /
development throughout. An old(?), rather familiar sound, I think, but a very pleasing / haunting one.

Pheeleep, "Mando"
---------------------------
Excellent creation of mood. I'd like to hear it without the rap, just because I wonder if Tupak
actually adds anything. His rap does fit well, but the song probably also stands well on its own. Or, ... you could add an instrumental solo. Anyway - well done! Sounds like you're using just a few
instruments at most in parts, proving that "less is more" when the "less" is used well.

Impressive synth sounds, but . . . listening just now it strikes me that you would soon get tired of
a whole album of even the warmest leads like this. Still, . . . this is definitely well done, even aside from the lead sounds.

YouTM, "Brood"

Good sound - dense, but clear (not an easy thing to do, I think), fun rythym, appealing vocals,
funky sounds, original subject! I can't make out at least half the lyrics, but I did figure out
cicadas all on my own. (Could you post the lyrics?)

Fitch, "Cell"
-----------------
Another contender for "best song-writing," I think. The rythym is really "catchy," and you cut
the cool-sounding percussion in / out to great effect. Someone mentioned "expressive," referring
to your cello-playing a while ago, and it's certainly true . . . giving this tune a certain "humanity" it's hard to find in others, even those with vocals (perhaps because they are heavily processed, while your cello is not, letting the musician's natural 'voice' come through all the better.)

Miro, "Dirty City"
------------------------
Nice bass line. I like the "springy" "sproingy" sounds too. I could go on, but it's basically good
sound / mixing letting the well-chosen instruments work really well together.

Yeah, I think I understand what you mean. I think it's how I played the song. It was badly played...it sounds very jerky. I played it faster than it's meant to be played, trying to finish it in 2 min. I played it on the sequencer's metronome, but I hated doing it for the tempo of this song should not be constant.

Hm, some nice stuff in this competition, hopefully I'll get something done as well, finally, after all that long time...

However, I wonder if plunge will be posting anything. I was just listening to "Standing Still", April's winner... and WOW! This is easily one of the best songs I've ever heard on K-v-R!!! What a great example of how one could make a completely arranged song fit into 2 minutes (oh well, I'd like at least one more chorus at the end).
Seriously, this has blown me away, plunge, if you're reading this, congrats! Execptionally great choice of sounds, excellent playing and programming, a tasty arrangement and all that accompanying a very good voice in a great sounding mix!
Seriously, people who know me will also know that I'm not all that much into the "hey, dude, killer" comments but prefer honest ones.
These are honest!

I'm so glad that you got what I was trying to say! For anyone who doesn't know about Brood X, here's some more info. I live in the thick of the swarm of these giant insects, though it still hasn't reached it's peak around here. I took a bunch of pictures the other day which I'll post if anyone is interested. The noise has been steadily getting louder and louder and the little critters are everywhere, but I remember 17 years ago during the last occurrence of this particular phenomenon and it was amazing. One evening, I remember everything covered with cicadas - the street was a shiny moving mass of bugs. And then they were all dead. Millions of big dead bugs rotting everywhere. Ew. Now their children are coming out - but I'm worried: I see a lot of deformed and prematurely dying ones. I wonder if pesticides and pollution have affected them...
