That's not a correct way to look at it at all. New features does NOT mean new code. It's still the same old C/C++ code syntax that old 20+ years! ;)

I have been in IT industry since last 18 years. That "old code" argument really made me laugh. May be they mean Legacy code, which is understandable. Code optimization is required from time to time if there is a lot of change around it e.g. hardware, etc. There are so many applications especially in Banking and Finance industry that is very very old but still kicking ass and running on mainframes.

We can do time stretching process as online process with very good quality. We can not do that as online process 15 years ago. Because The way was not found. And our processors could not handle at that time. That's why we called some codes as "old".

Old codes were written for "old" configurations and does not include latest researches.

Sooooo...how come almost every DAW on the market does all of those things, then, yet are "old code", whereas Reaper all on its own that does the same thing as every other DAW, is "new code"? Hmmmmmmmmmm?

Ok.

I think you don't like analogy. Lets compare Sonar and Studio One.

Select 40 stereo tracks in a folder and drag them in Sonar and S1.

Sonar's import and analyse process takes about 4-5 minutes.

S1 will do same job about 3-4 seconds. why?

Because Sonar is using its 20 years old "import" algorithm.

But S1 uses a new algorithm which are coded in consideration of latest researches.

This is what old&new codes comparison.

Sorry, but that's way off...

If what you say about the performance difference is true, it has nothing to do with "state of the art import algorithms"(not that such a thing exists), it's just good code vs. bad code, or even just different design objectives and trading import time for other benefit XYZ(because importing tracks 10x faster isn't going to help your tunes very much)... and there was bad code being written in the 90s just like there's bad code being written today.

C and C++ haven't changed much since then, so there's not much more "state of the art" to be had there, it's just that Sonar apparently has some sort of performance bottleneck like performing unnecessary and/or less efficient analysis, etc... but that has absolutely nothing to do with the age of the code, and all of the math that audio software uses was invented in the 1800s or earlier...

I like the way tho old code sounds. Has more character and life, not as digital sounding.

No, just the opposite... Recent stuff sounds more analog because of the advances in the ability of developers to use Photoshop to skin their plugins to look just like a real TB-303...

i can't really believe any daw has been "totally rewritten from the ground up" ever.

i think another problem is when a programmer quits, gets fired, retires, or passes away w/o fully passing on all his details and secrets to the company.

and hopefully they didnt piss him off first.

Old code vs new code vs old brains.... Good luck

Wow, that couldn't have been a more horrible example. I mean, let's put aside the fact that Sonar's import code didn't likely exist 20 years ago, and the fact that you don't actually KNOW what the code is like, and the fact that the two programs might be doing different things behind the scenes, and.............the fact that your argument is a poor one. You get the idea.

Sorry, I'm a Studio One user. It's my favorite and most used host by FAR these days. I'm a huge fan. But even I wouldn't make the stupid "old code" vs. "new code" claim with what you just said.

I wonder when hal is coming into the picture code wise.

"I'm sorry dave, that is a not a valid beat"........

I'm kind of thinking out loud here, but, IIRC someone over t the Sonar forums did, in fact, use the arguement that a 'legacy' program was a reason why full customization went the way of the dodo bird in X1

I guess the 'old' vs 'new' thing is just another fine example of searching for straws... :hihi:

Anyways lets get back on topic shall we :hihi: Did KVR scare away all the Reaper Fanbois ??? And what happened to BitWig or is just getting harder to find good cat pics these days ?

Post

It's hard to get back on topic when you're trying to have a discussion with a user base who has been scared away...... :hihi:
