I started working with computers in 1982, when a console was ALL that was available.

Here it is 2013 and it's acceptable for a Windows app, Really?

All the convolution is a result of an endrun around proprietary software in the name of GPL, Linux will always be this way when it comes to porting to windows.

Even once you've learnt it, it's awfully tedious to set-up and use, especially compared to ReWire's automatic and dynamic set-up/routing.

You will be able to connect 32 bit to 64 bit apps with Jack is a major strong point , Im no way praising Jack , I learned it because I did a Linux DAW thing a couple of years ago , but I mainly do music on Windows still . I think its a bad idea for BWS , NOT to support/include Rewire on the Windows and Mac versions , I look it kind of like the Windows8 start menu missing in a sense , you can get on with out it and there is an alternative , but do you like it ? Another thing I do like about Jack on linux is I shrink the GUI of it , then set always on top , and I can monitor to see if I get any hiccups , buffer underruns , xruns ,or pops and clicks right there on the screen . So , Its got some good qualities , its not complete garbage like people portray it to be .

Have you tried Jack 1.9.9? It's been a flawless double-click install on three different systems now for me. I was reluctant to try again after the "you may have to register jackrouter.dll manually" fiddlyness of 1.9.8, but 1.9.9 was as easy as pie.

And were you on Windows in the 90s? Because "little or no fuss" doesn't quite seem to describe what I remember. I think it's where I got the usability calluses that so help me with Linux nowadays.

I took your advice and loaded 1.9.9. What a convoluted nerdish affair THAT was, How do they expect ANYONE who doesn't understand their systems to install and use jack for ASIO drivers to set THAT up. I maen REALLy... really. It took me searching the interwebs and running the console over and over just to find the NAME of the card drivers durn it.

I can't believe that musicianship has come to this, where it is necessary to be a nerd to setup a streaming audio app, in WINDOWS, come on.

I still can't figure out how to setup the MIDI ports, probably take all day to figure that out.

Honestly, anyone who think's the Linux way of doing things is great should stick to gaming or Trekky Conventions.

Did you read the enclosed readme? I honestly don't know what you're talking about.

It's so easy I can tell you by heart:

- Run installer
- start jack server (by double-click on the qjackctl.exe or shortcut)
- open preferences (via the "setup" button)
- add "/S" in the huge glaring text field named "server path"
- make sure portaudio is selected as driver
- select the desired sound card for output from the Input/Output drop down menu
- click OK
- press the "play" button to start the server
- done

Convoluted? Seriously? I mean short of somebody installing it for you, how could it possibly be easier?

And yes, they need to change the damn jackaudio.org page on installing because it refers to a deprecated version. There is no command line or console involved in windows install at all.

They said 1+ year ago that there is no plans for it, now they say that they still dont have specific plans about but if very required they may include it, dont see what is the problem with that, specially when you use software that waited 8 years to implement 64 bits after the first CPUs have been released


Anyway after one afternoon trying to deal with Windows8 "Secure Boot" feature (and still not solved it) to keep us all secure and free (from better software that is, it is almost like USA, we spy on you, like WW2 germany just to keep you safe ) I really want to all the big ones in tech to go ... anyway when dealing with open or at least relatively open tech I never have these problems... It is so much easier to just deal with Ubuntu , I hope that soon I will have no Windows need.

Indeed. Focus on a uniform featureset across all platforms you're releasing on, then focus on adjusting your product individually where there's a business case for it is the right way to do it if you have scarce development ressources.

But people complain ReWire is not in there, then when BW say they might add it later if enough people request it, they complain about how confusing that is, all the while professing their utter disinterest in Bitwig, which they are certain will never be released anyway.
