Work Song

This month you're asked to submit a work song, using this definition from Wikipedia:
A work song is a piece of music closely connected to a specific form of work, either sung while conducting a task (often to coordinate timing) or a song linked to a task or trade which might be a connected narrative, description, or protest song.

NOTE 1: For the purposes of this contest song = track = piece = thing = whathaveyou (which is to say, you may submit a work song that has no words or vocal at all).

NOTE 2: Please put "KVR May 2013" (without the quotes) in the Album space in your submission's tags. If you're not sure how to do that, please ask.
_____________________________________________________
Submissions MUST follow these rules:

1 - Encoded in either .mp3 or .ogg format.

2 - A STRICT MAXIMUM of three minutes in length. If it shows up as 3:01 in my player, it's getting the boot.

3 - entered into the contest by posting a DIRECT LINK in this RULES & SUBMISSIONS thread (use the GOSSIP thread for everything else). If you cant provide a direct link, please contact one of the following people listed below, they will be happy to help you out. These people provide free hosting for the purpose of this contest only! They are not a hosting service. When contacting these people, please take the effort to understand the terms and conditions they provide.

Providers:
1 - knockman
2 - watto
3 - slartibartfast

In addition...
Kara at www.kara-moon.com/forum has offered "self service" space. Log into the forum to find out more.

But wait! There's more! If you use SoundCloud to host your entry, you might find this tutorial by kryptonaut helpful. Bear in mind that SoundCloud's free accounts have a limit (per track) of 100 downloads.

4 - Submitted by early a.m. (US Central Time) Saturday, May 25th, 2013.

5 - Your entry must be composed specifically for this contest.

6 - Your entry must be created using at least some audio plugins, virtual synths, or software studio.

7 - Your entry should have the FILE named in a format of "yearmonth_artistname_tracktitle" (ie "1206_artistname_tracktitle.mp3"), where the artistname is the same as your KVR name. Please do not use spaces and special characters in the filename.

8 - If you are going to tag your mp3--and you should--the artist name is to be the same as your KVR name, and the title tag is to be the name of your tune(help us out, okay? it's easier to sift through labelled entries).

9 - One person can participate either with one entry, with one entry and one collaborative effort or with two collaborative efforts.

10 - Every submission has to be tagged with:
a) used instruments (virtual and 'real')
b) players' and singers' names (if other than entrant; collabs are allowed, sometimes encouraged, but they must be credited)
c) origin of loops and samples, if they're not free of copyright (this includes CreativeCommons material; please read and follow the license of the samples and loops you use); naming the origin of copyright free loops is also encouraged, but not mandatory. Please only use samples you are legally entitled to use.
d) name(s) of composer(s) -- if an entry is a cover this should be noted in the file name and/or the mp3 "Title" tag as well as the submission post (not everyone reads the submission posts).

11 - If there are strong doubts about the origin of the composition or parts of it, the participant should have the possibility to send a project file to the moderator, who could give it to a trustworthy person with the right host to examine it. Important: the participant should not be forced to do it.

12 - No resubmissions without permission from the moderator, INCLUDING for time-overage correction. PM me for permission!

13 - Any tracks not adhering to these guidelines will be very naughty indeed. Possibly disqualified upon peer review. And at least mocked for all to point and giggle.

14 - Voting (members must have at least 20 posts to vote ... although contest entrants are exempt from this ruling) will run from the submission deadline until early a.m Saturday, June 1st. Anyone voting for themselves will find ALL their votes disqualified; any entrants not voting will also be disqualified.

If you have questions, send a private message to D.H. Miltz or ask in the gossip thread.

Shaman

Shaman (download)
http://soundcloud.com/kryptonaut/shaman

I chant the sacred words
I play the mystic tunes
I burn the magic herbs
I cast the secret runes

'Cos I'm the Shaman, I'm the Shaman
I am one with the parrot, the piranha and the cayman
Hey man, I'm the Shaman
The spirits of the Amazon will show me the way, man

As the pounding of the drum
Drives the beating of my heart
Let the spirit guides come
Let the ritual start.
I dance in a circle
Throw leaves on the fire
A magical spell
To let my spirit fly higher

I chant the sacred words
I play the mystic tunes
I burn the magic herbs
I cast the secret runes
I wear the feathered cloak
To help my spirit fly
I breathe the bitter smoke
As I head into the sky

'Cos I'm the Shaman, I'm the Shaman
I am one with the parrot, the piranha and the cayman
Hey man, I'm the Shaman
And when the spirits call, well you gotta obey, man.

Spirit of the Jaguar and the Anaconda
Come to me now, let me dance a little longer.

Everybody sing, everybody dance
See the world spin as I fall into a trance.
Everybody stand, everybody cheer
As I raise my hand and spirits are here.
Everybody run, everybody hide
Enemies are coming from the Other Side.
Everybody scream, everybody shout
From deep in my dream hear the spirits call out.

Cos I'm the Shaman, I'm the Shaman
I am one with the parrot, the piranha and the cayman
Hey man, I'm the Shaman
The spirits of the Amazon will show me the way, man

evo2slo - A Mother's Work

who combed your hair and brushed your teeth
who read you stories and let you believe
when you woke up from a bad dream
who rocked you in her arms until you fell back asleep
a mother's work is never done
don't take her for granted show her some love
every father, daughter, husband, and son
let's make every day mother's day
never forget who wiped your butt
never forget who cleaned you up
when you had the flu who made you chicken soup
when you got a boo boo who kissed it for you
a mother's work is never done...
always remember who made you feel better
always remember who wrote you long letters
when you moved away and was feeling homesick
who made sure you knew you were deeply missed
a mother's work is never done…

Imigrant Blues

When I came to this country thought the streets were paved with gold
When I came to this country thought the streets were paved with gold
So I payed the man my money now he owns me body and soul.

From the early early morning til the sun has gone away
From the early early morning til the sun has gone away
I break my body for a dollar and a half a day.

I had a good friend but he can't work no more
I had a good friend but he can't work no more
He asked for water they clubbed him to the floor.

My wife she left me took my children too
My wife she left me took my children too
She's gone home to Mama left me with the Imigrant Blues.

Got bugs in my bed roaches crawlin' cross the floor
Got bugs in my bed roaches crawlin' cross the floor
Got the Imigrant Blues howlin' at the door.

I'm broke and hungry got holes in both my shoes
I'm broke and hungry got holes in both my shoes
Goin' down to the river, lose these Imigrant Blues.

Seemed appropriate somehow.

Back in the 60's, when I was working the blues clubs, I built up quite a collection of special albums (long since re-distributed, I'm sorry to say). One of these was called something like "Negro Folklore from Texas State Prisons" and was a collection of field recordings of actual chain gangs and prisoners.
I have seconded the title, and approximate style, of one of those songs and spun it in my own way.
Here is the 'gang-master', with his encouragement, and the workers with their responses embellished with some dobro and harp along with a foot-stomp and spike-driving sound.
The foot-stomp is a 'special' which I developed recently that involves a skin-less tambourine wrapped in a towel placed on the base of the mic-stand then tapped with the foot and the result rubbed with a little CamelPhat. The spike-drive has been borrowed from another recent project and was a field recording by my buddy LarryK.
Raise Em Up Higher
Raise em up higher
Bring em down

You got to swing that hammer
Got to hit that spike

Got to keep the rhythm
Cos ya doing time

Gonna think about ya woman
Like ya used to do

Just to keep her happy
Got to do what you do

You're all working your time
Striking spikes on the line

If you keep up the pace
You might win the race

You're here for what seems
Like eternity

And the bigger the fool
If you don't see

The devil gonna get ya
If you lose ya stroke

And you'll rot in prison
If you don't keep up

I'm a watchin like a hawk
Who miss a hit

Gonna starve off the rations
If ya slacking it

Building A Cathedral

This song was inspired by one of the most shameful aspects of my country, its treatment of construction workers, especially immigrants. Many a construction company blatantly cheated them not only of their wages but insurance and pension contributions too (a part of the gross payout must be "put away" for that by the employer, according to the law here). Most complaints are suppressed quickly by threats of firing and deportation. Corruption is rampant and any case that is brought to the court is either stalled for decades or dropped in suspicious circumstances.

So .. the honest hardworking man takes the beating in the world where money follows where bullshit walks, and the clever and successful (in a modern sense) businessman just respawns like a lackluster game addict .. since any kind of money, even stolen or blood spattered, buys resourceful lawyers. And that's what this song is supposed to be about.

Enjoy
Cheers Matt

Don't say you're just laying bricks for a wall;
See the big picture, hear the greatness call!
You're building a cathedral,
said the bosswith his fancy shoes and tie;
We're building a cathedral,
Don't it make feel all warm inside.

No more laying bricks, my hungry baby cries,
We went bankrupt but The Man still buys new ties.
Where is your cathedral?
No more bricks, no more work, no more hope.
Where is our cathedral?
He took the bells, I got the rope.
