with regard to learning guitar (or any other instrument, for that matter), I'm a huge believer in private lessons with a competent teacher - one on one. Nothing else can help you move forward as a player faster.

I'd agree... I know a couple of guys who learned by themselves, and now they are very good. But the dudes who got private lessons in the first place got to a very high level way before the guys who didn't get any lessons.Mister Natural wrote:with regard to learning guitar (or any other instrument, for that matter), I'm a huge believer in private lessons with a competent teacher - one on one. Haven't read the other posts but at the end of the day
If you want it to happen more than anything else, you will find a way
If you don't want it that much, you will find an excuse
If you have put it off for so long then it shows you have found excuses = not wanted it as much as you thought you did?
In my opinion we get what we deserve, what we put in we get out, if you are successful it generally means you've worked your arse off while other people have done other things (partied. watched tv etc.)
If you want to make it happen go out and do so

Working the arse off isn't a guaranty to get successful, unfortunately. But doing nothing is a guaranty to achieve nothing, for sure!Mike20 wrote:In my opinion we get what we deserve, what we put in we get out, if you are successful it generally means you've worked your arse off while other people have done other things (partied. watched tv etc.)
So it's better to have something done in the end of the day...

It's also about working smart as you say, setting goals constantly, breaking up the big picture to smaller more achievable pieces which will lead to the big picture,
The way i have achieved to where i am now, is tackling everything individually, sound design, mixing, etc. when focusing on mixing i would spend 2 months say downloading MIDIs from nonstop2k, so not worrying about writing melodies/ chords etc. then just make sure i write 3 tracks per week, mix them down as best as i can then compare them to professional tracks
Taking this approach to every aspect of production helps you to perfect each element, but then obviously you need to produce enough music to create your own sound, it may not be the fastest way but i see it as very effective to become a professional
And the key to success is persistence in my opinion, producing 4 hours every night is better than one day a week doing 20 hours IMO

obviously if you mean getting famous, then no there are no guarentees.
if however it means "finishing a piece of work you yourself are proud of"
