I've had very mixed results trying to use a network connection setup (wifi) to output midi from my iPad to my DAW. I picked up a camera connection kit, plugged in a USB cable there and to the computer, but don't know what else has to be set up for that to work - it doesn't now. What am I missing?

Replace the USB cable with a USB MIDI interface. I got one for less than 10$ on Amazon, and it works great.

Greetings. It depends on which ipad you have. Most devices work with ipad 1,2 and 3 but not 4. I've been working on this very thing for a month now for the ipad 4. But this works for all ipads. When the signal comes from the ipad through the camera connection kit it has to be converted to midi with a usb to midi cable. something like this:

(1) So, camera connection kit to usb/midi cable.

(2) Then you have to plug the midi cable into a usb/midi interface like this:

(3) Usb cable from the usb/midi interface to the computer.

Now as far as getting audio into the pc from the ipad, the only way to do that for at least another month or so is to run an audio cord from the headphone jack on the ipad to the pc. To do that with what ever interface(2nd device in the chain) you use would need to have audio capability. Or you could go straight into your pc audio card but I've read the audio may not be that good.

But change is coming in that regard because of this baby here:

Its the iConnectivity iConnectMIDI2+. These folks have developed what they call "audio pass through" in which midi and audio will pass through on the same usb cable coming from the ipad. So unlike the above method you could use the usb cable, run it into the iconnectmidi2+ then to the pc and get better audio plus only need the one device and not 2. Check it out further here and watch the vid: You will need a standard A-B USB cable from your Ipad

Its due out in a little over a mouth so I'm holding out as it will cut my cost in half plus allow tracking straight into a daw with the best audio available. Also with a power adapter it will charge the ipad.

Thanks for the info. Looks like you have done a lot of research. I will shortly be facing the same problem when I get the iPad 4 or 5 when ready. I subscribed to this thread and am awaiting further details from you.

Interesting and helpful. It is curious that USB to midi cable is needed when my Novation controller uses plan USB into the computer to send midi....

iConnectMIDI is highly recommended. There will be 2 new models available soon the 2+ and 4+. These will also transfer audio via USB / digital, which is a nice bonus. The price will also be lower than the original unit.

These work great as a general MIDI hub too, since it can accepts multiple USB and MIDI connections, and acts as a USB host without requiring a computer i.e. you could plug any USB keyboard in and output to MIDI DIN.

For network MIDI, use rtpMIDI (Win) or set network MIDI in Audio MIDI Setup (Mac).

I've seen it mentioned that it can work like that but the controller would need to be class compliant. Some Novation controllers have been said to work. A google search like "class compliant midi controllers that work with ipad", should dig up more info.

The thing to understand is most devices were made to get midi and audio into the ipad so it could be your main recording device. So, it looks like there's a lot out there but incorporating a pc into the mix is a different story.

The Alesis io dock and Griffin StudioConnect Audio will work for ipad 1,2 and 3. But not 4 because of the lightning port.

The Studio Connect might work with a lightning to 30 pin adapter but I'm not chancing it.

Thanks to Andy's comment, I explored further, and found a USB to Midi cable and interface is NOT needed just to go from iPad to computer. I have a camera connection kit and USB cable into the computer, and after activating the AudioMidi setup on my Mac Live recognizes input from the iPad. Have not had as much luck yet with midi out to the iPad, but that is less important to me now. So, the special cable plus Midi interface are not necessary for this application!

As iConnectMIDI has been mentioned a few times on this thread I just want to add I have the current device and it is fantastic! It is only for MIDI, though. Not Audio. It is a solid device and has performed really well. I am a fan! It helped me with all of my MIDI routing issues (iPad, USB Keyboards, MIDI keyboards/racks). All talking to each other without any headaches. It just works. I definitely recommend keeping your eye on the release for their new devices.

The camera connection kit is not a midi interface, so you still need a midi interface between it and the computer.
With midi keyboards etc, they have a midi interface built in, so it's just a single usb cable.

- Your Novation has a midi interface built in.
- A "USB to midi cable" IS a (1x1) midi interface, with midi cables attached.

Yes, because there's a midi interface on the other end. USB by itself only transmits 0s & 1s. A midi interface interprets it.

Andy, would you happen to know what the spec of the transferred audio will be? Max sample rate? 24 bits? Max # of channels? There's nothing on the site about this. NDA'ed?
