An 80s bass synth?

I would also think you can get pretty close with freeware, i mean there's nothing "magic" about that sound. Sounds neat, but at that time the productions weren't really what they are today. Should be nice to replicate though, as there's not really much if any effects on it.

Yes, it is a relatively simple bass sound. There are others from the 80s which are much more challenging to emulate...

You might not get 100% identical sounds with freeware, but you won't get it with commercial synths, either, because you don't know which settings they used on the original.
I have never tried that specific synth bass as I don't like it, but I am sure you could do something very similar using TAL's free Noizemaker, which also has a 0df LP filter.

i know the history of that filter as i was the one who bugged patrick to implement one as soon as diva was released in beta (was hoping not to shell out for diva ;P). it was just his first very quick attempt at one ...before even any dsp examples were even available.
wasn't even set out to emulate any particular filter nor nonlinearities.,..but just a first explorative attempt at predictive approach rather than per sample.
and yes u can get close to those kind of basses both on elektro and noisemaker .....i made funkbass on elk7ro before purchasing diva and was "almost satisfied".
the difference isn't huge....but on non 0dff theres that plastic feel on a tightly modulated resonant sounds which sucks a bit of punch out of the sound.
i would never go back to per sample filters...and seems not even TAL has gone back to per sample filters nor any other developer for that matter. that says it all.

sounds similar to the classic Yamaha TX81z "Lately Bass" patch... the attack is quite uniform over the octave which is a distinct FM thing.

true u could make something similar even with a dx7 .....but this bassline was made in 1982 (when the dx7 was not even released ) and was made with a minimoog slightly mixed with a real bass in some parts ( i know cos i remember reading an article about it on sound on sound)

safe to say with a bit more tweaking a minimoog will get u 90% there....then a a bit of tape trick...mix in a real bass slightly..and u get pretty much there. keep in mind trevor horn was some sick producer. he could make even a spoon sound awesome.

I don't know how good the 0df filter in Noisemaker is, it does sound quite different from the conventional LP filter included. Often for the better, sometimes for the worse. (Assuming CI LP is the 0df variant.)
Actually, the filters I use the most are the 18db LP and the 12db BP filter. The SV filters are not so good in my view, they often produce a slight, but audible noise (hence Noisemaker I suppose )

Of course developers will stick to the 0df technology once they can handle it. But that doesn't mean there are no great sounding synths/filters without that technology. I just don't buy into that 0df hype. Some seem to think one is outdated if one doesn't use such synths...
Some of my favorite basses even come from a Synthedit synth hardly anyone knows, it can do great bass sounds because of its architecture, sounds Noisemaker can't do despite its 0df filter. Even the ancient and outdated P8 with its lame filter can produce some juicy basses thanks to its voice detuning and double architecture.

One really doesn't need a xxx dollar synth just in order to make great synth bass sounds.
