Why do i get pops/clicks on most sample libraries?

This thread is basically a rehash of part of one the OP started a few weeks ago. Which was basically a rehash of part of another one of his from a few weeks earlier than that.

OP responses in the original threads were, erm, nebulous. Expect the same this time round.

If you haven't already, download a latency monitor and look for DPC latency. I found that my WiFi and the battery power management drivers had to be disabled to allow audio to work without clicks, pops and drop outs.Jedinhopy wrote:On many sample libraries there is pops clicks in the beginning of the waveform.
In the middle of the sound. And it can be anywhere in the wav file.
There is too many samples to fix.
They use bad microphones.
They have bad ears since they can't hear very short sounds.
They use bad speakers/headphones.
I have spent (1,815.72 USD) on sample libraries.
The positive things are:
Good sound quality.
Gives inspiration.
Nice GUI interface.
Convolution reverb.
The negative things are:
Too much treble.
Pops/clicks on random samples.
Long loading times.
No loop points.
Unstable stereo image.
My music is a fusion of jazz and funk. It's called "Junk"

Partitioning is THE WORST thing you can do for your streaming performance. Why? Because each new partition on the same physical drive is SLOWER than preceding one.Shangsean wrote:I'm sure Play runs fine for some, but the OP's problem is why I'm not willing to invest in Play. I run Kontakt and Engine libraries just fine off my partitioned internal harddrive. It's just a standard 7200 drive with my OS on C and samples (and a bunch of other crap) on D and E partitions. Judging by most reports about Play, it seems what Evil Dragon is saying is basically what you need to do.
Definitely get a separate hard drive for just sample libraries to maximize streaming efficiency. It totally helps! I have 5 disks (1 for OS and programs, 3 for sample libraries, 1 for DAW projects and work-in-progress stuff).

On a large 7200 rpm drive (eg 2GB+) you can put a system partition of modest size (3-500GB say) and have a second samples partition that is quite large and still quite fast. I run my pianos etc on that drive and have two other drives for streaming audio and drum samples (eg BFD). I put storage/backup partitions on the back end of those drives. If I was running massive orchestral templates I would use dedicated SSDs.EvilDragon wrote: Partitioning is THE WORST thing you can do for your streaming performance. Why? That's true to a point, however I still wouldn't recommend partitioning in this day and age. In my experience multiple drives are just the more efficient way to go, for various reasons.

I think i should stop buying sample libraries and buy synthesizers instead. Since a sawtooth waveform does not have pops/clicks. And vst effects don't use samples.MA-Simon wrote:+1Does not help since the pops clicks are in the exactly same place every time play i the same note again.
Nothing wrong with my computer.
Happens in the standalone too.
I happen to get those clicks a lot.
Win-7 64bit

16,0 GB ram
SSD-drive (ATA Samsung SSD 830 SCSI Disk Device)
-> Symphonic Choirs (+ newest update)
Close & Surround mics are essentially unusable because of bad loop point & clicks. Normal mic works fine.
One thing that creates pops/clicks to any sound is volume ADSR envelope.
Attack is zero. Decay is zero. Sustain is full. Release is zero.
Instant pops/clicks when you press/release the keyboard note.

That's the normal behaviour of an envelope with extremely fast attack and release times - they do clicks/pops. This is true on hardware synths as well.
Just shows how little you know about this stuff, obviously.

Umm, yeah. I think you need to sit down and think a bit about what you're saying. A sound which ahs a volume transient that goes from silence to full loudness in the shortest possible period of time sounds like a click? What do you think a click is?Jedinhopy wrote:One thing that creates pops/clicks to any sound is volume ADSR envelope.

Instant pops/clicks when you press/release the keyboard note.
And if the fastest possible transient you deliberately create with an envelope makes a click... how hard is it to slow down the transient. you made it click with the envelope, so to stop the click, you change the envelope.

Yes. Everyone in the world sets their envelope attacks as fast as possible, and with no decay or release, whether they need to or not. Its strange; no-one seems to know how to change that, even when its explained to them that a slower attack setting would prevent it. Weird, huh?Jedinhopy wrote:So people make music full of pops/clicks?
I glad you came up with an insightful question like that after thinking about it for a while, though.

I bet they dont even hear the distortion in their amped-electric-guitar libraries.Jedinhopy wrote:If they can't hear pops/clicks.

Distortion creates new harmonics. And those harmonics makes pops/clicks.whyterabbyt wrote:I bet they dont even hear the distortion in their amped-electric-guitar libraries.Jedinhopy wrote:If they can't hear pops/clicks.

true. without any exceptions. ever.Jedinhopy wrote:Distortion creates new harmonics. And those harmonics makes pops/clicks.whyterabbyt wrote:I bet they dont even hear the distortion in their amped-electric-guitar libraries.Jedinhopy wrote:If they can't hear pops/clicks.

but the upside is that every time a new harmonic creates a click, an angel gets its wings.
